WWE Monday Night RAW and Smackdown: A Look at the Announcing Situation

Justin EldridgeOct 13, 2011

With the removal of Jim Ross from the announce table Monday night for who knows how long, I got quite angry that he got messed with in his home state once again.   Many people say they are getting numb to JR getting messed with by WWE at this point. I for one am not numb to it at all.

I have no idea what JR may have done in the past to warrant such treatment from a company he has been extremely loyal to since he joined them. Maybe the fact he worked for Ted Turner at one point? Beats me.

I just know that I, for one, and I am sure there are others that agree with me, am sick and tired of how they treat Jim Ross on WWE programming. He is one of the best announcers they have ever had and deserves to be treated better.

Josh Matthews is coming along quite nicely behind the desk, and Jerry Lawler is Jerry Lawler (who should go back to heel commentating in my opinion).  They can only carry so much, though, due to the fact that Michael Cole seems like he only wants the spotlight on him during matches and he constantly detracts from them as far as I'm concerned.

I find Booker T funny at the announce table, but he doesn't really enhance any of the matches when it seems that all he ever says is "Whoa!' and "Did you just see that?"

Furthermore, when he and Cole get into it with each other, poor Josh Matthews is left trying to call the match in between their constant bickering, which again is a huge turn-off.

I get that Cole is the heel announcer but first of all he is too over the top with his love of the heel wrestlers to be taken seriously as a good play-by-play guy.

Second is a return to what I stated previously: he constantly detracts from the quality of the match with his constant bickering with the other announcers.

If Cole and Booker want to have their "face vs. heel" announcer game at the desk, they should take some cues from when Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan masterfully worked it during their commentating years. They enhanced the talent in the ring and had their mini arguments at the same time without detracting from the match.

Heenan was always rooting for the heel, but he always dialed it back so it wasn't absurd. Even Jesse Ventura and Gorilla worked the exact same way. Jesse would be rooting for the heel but not in an over-the-top manner.

If I wanted to hear constant bickering while I watched wrestling, I would stream audio from FOX News network while they interviewed a Democrat. I don't want to hear that, though. I want my announcers to enhance the in ring product of the show I'm watching.

WWE, because of Vince McMahon's obsession of screwing with Jim Ross and firing him from the show, has thrown that option down the toilet.

Unless things change rapidly behind the announce tables, I will be watching RAW and Smackdown with the volume off.

Let me know what you think on this subject. Agree or disagree, all comments are welcome.
