BCS Standings 2011: Why an Unbeaten Wisconsin Would Still Need Oklahoma to Lose

Outside of Alabama and LSU, there has not been a more impressive team in the country than Wisconsin. The Badgers have yet to give up more than 17 points in a game and have scored over 35 points in every game, including four games with 48 points or more. The lowest margin they’ve beaten a team by is 31 points.

That is the definition of domination.

Unfortunately for fans, Wisconsin is still on the outside looking in on the BCS National Championship picture.

The reason for this is their schedule. As of today, the Badgers will only play two ranked teams before the Big Ten Championship, and both of those teams could pretty easily become unranked before they face Wisconsin.

Alabama and LSU have been so dominant that it is unlikely for either to lose a game outside of when they play each other. This leaves Wisconsin fighting for the final spot in the BCS title, and their biggest competition is Oklahoma.

The Sooners have not been as dominant as Wisconsin, but they came in with so much preseason hype and have already played a tougher schedule. The scheduling argument becomes even more apparent when you look ahead—Oklahoma will play four teams currently ranked in the Top 25.

To end the season, they will play Oklahoma State, and if the winner of that game is undefeated, the Badgers can kiss their hopes of playing for a national championship goodbye.

Other undefeated teams have to face challenging schedules as well, but no one has more experience in big games than Oklahoma. If any team can get through their tough schedules unscathed, it would be them, and that would be all it takes to keep Wisconsin out of the national championship.

They also don’t have a championship game to worry about either.

Until the Sooners lose, Badger fans should not anticipate getting into the BCS National Championship Game.
