NFL Power Rankings: Which Teams Are in Serious Trouble?

Ryan PhillipsOct 13, 2011

After just five weeks of the 2011 NFL season, two NFC teams find themselves in serious trouble.

The Philadelphia Eagles currently sit at 1-4 and might be the most puzzling team in NFL history. Despite all the preseason hype about the "Dream Team," the Eagles have dropped four straight games after opening the season with a win.

Philadelphia currently has an NFL-worst minus-10 turnover margin, and that has contributed directly to their losses. While the team's porous offensive line has not helped him at all, quarterback Michael Vick has thrown seven interceptions. That is simply unacceptable for a guy who just signed a $100 million contract before the season.

While the Eagles currently rank third in the NFL in total offense (445.6 yards per game), they have only turned those yards into an average of 25 points per game. On defense, Philadelphia simply needs to get better. The Eagles spent a lot of money to add to their secondary and defensive line, but they are currently surrendering 352 yards per game, which places them 15th in the NFL.

Right now the Eagles are sitting in the basement of the NFC East and haven't looked anywhere close to figuring out a turnaround. Something dramatic needs to happen if Philadelphia wants to see the postseason.

The Atlanta Falcons were considered by many to be a potential Super Bowl contender before the season started. Somehow, despite an embarrassing level of great offensive talent, Atlanta dropped to 2-3 after a home loss to the Green Bay Packers Sunday night.

Quarterback Matt Ryan leads an offense that currently ranks just 19th in the NFL in total offense (338.4 yards per game) and is currently averaging just 20.8 points per game (21st in the NFL). Ryan's unit features stud receivers Roddy White and Julio Jones, future Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez and running back Michael Turner, yet somehow they can't get things going consistently.

Despite a ton of preseason hype, Ryan has failed to perform up to the level expected of him. Through five games he has completed 120 of 196 passes for 1,302 yards, with seven touchdowns and six interceptions. His quarterback rating of 79.9 currently ranks 21st in the league.

The Falcons simply need more out of their offense if they hope to regain control of their season. Something dramatic has to happen for them to come out of their current tailspin.
