UFC on Fox: Will Junior dos Santos' Ground Game Finally Be Tested?
This is the Junior dos Santos scouting report:
- Power ✔
- hand speed ✔
- footwork ✔
- conditioning ✔
- take down defence ✔
- ground game....
- ground game....
- ground game?
It's not that Dos Santos doesn't have a ground game as I'm sure he practices with some of the best in the world on a daily basis—and for quite some time now. It's just that we have not seen him use it very often in the cage as Dos Santos utilizes some of the best boxing and takedown defence in the world to dismantle most who stand in front of him.
Heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez is a world-class wrestler and fighter, the best all-around big man in the game today. We have seen the champs wrestling and boxing and when the two clash at UFC on Fox in November, he is going to have to take Dos Santos down and keep him there as a blue print to defending his belt for the very first time.
Dos Santos' ground game will finally be tested to the fullest in this one, as Cain Velasquez will be more relentless in keeping him there than anyone Junior has ever faced. Between the championship rounds and the impeccable conditioning of Velasquez, he will be on the floor for at least half of this fight in my opinion, but I'm not extremely concerned for the man they call Cigano.
Junior will show that he indeed does have sufficient, if not significant skills on the ground and Cain will have his hands full at all times in this one.
Yes, Dos Santos is a boxer at his core but I think he knows full well that he is going to have to work on the ground in this fight with Cain. I'm also sure he welcomes the opportunity to prove that it is he, and not Velasquez, who is the most well-rounded big man in the game.
