NFL Power Rankings: Which Divisions Are League's Strongest?

Ryan PhillipsOct 12, 2011

Through five weeks of the 2011 NFL season, two divisions have separated themselves as the best in football. The NFC North boasts the league's two undefeated teams in Green Bay and Detroit, while the AFC East has two 4-1 teams in New England and Buffalo. While both divisions have their weaknesses, they are incredibly top-heavy and are easily the toughest in football.

As mentioned, the NFC North has both of the NFL's undefeated teams. While the Lions have had a few close calls, the Packers have easily been the league's most dominant team.

While the division gets a little thin after those two juggernauts, the 2-3 Chicago Bears would be a decent squad if they could somehow protect quarterback Jay Cutler. As for the Minnesota Vikings, there is no reason they should be 1-4. Any team with Adrian Peterson and Jared Allen should have won a few games by now.

Both the Bears and Vikings should improve as the season goes along, while the Packers are now solidly entrenched as Super Bowl favorites and the Lions look like a lock to make the playoffs. With that in mind, the NFC North is clearly the league's best division right now.

The AFC East is another top-heavy division, with the Patriots and Bills sitting at 4-1. The New York Jets were expected to be able to return to a third consecutive AFC title game, but they are currently 2-3 after dropping three straight games.

Luckily, this Monday night, Rex Ryan's bunch has a chance to right the ship against the division's caboose, the 0-4 Miami Dolphins.

The Jets could still bounce back if they somehow turn around their 31st-ranked rushing attack and 21st-ranked passing offense. If Mark Sanchez and company can get things going on that side of the ball, the Jets could make a run to the playoffs.

The Dolphins are hopeless and are likely headed towards welcoming Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck to town, but the rest of the division is stacked. That makes the AFC East the NFL's second-toughest division.
