Week 6 Waiver Wire: Why You Must Add James Jones

Andrea HangstOct 12, 2011

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw completions to 12 different receivers in his team's Week 5 win over the Atlanta Falcons, and one of the names to stand out was wide receiver James Jones.

On a team with a major number of targets for Rodgers, Jones' stock has been rapidly rising. In the team's first three games, he was on the field for just 38 pass plays, but in the last two, he's played 50 snaps.

His stats reflect this increased playing time, with his yardage steadily going up week by week.

Last week, he had five receptions for 140 yards and a touchdown and he has 14 catches for 228 yards and two scores on the season. While Rodgers does spread the ball around, it's likely that as long as Jones keeps performing as well as he has, he will remain a go-to option for the quarterback.

The Packers like to stretch the field with three wide receiver sets, which is another reason for so many players catching Rodgers' passes. But with Jones being one of those three receivers and getting ever increasing playing time, the odds of him grabbing more and more passes rises in turn.

Just like with New Orleans Saints receivers, picking the right Packer for your fantasy roster can be a bit of a crap-shoot. Fortunes shift like the tides on teams with so many targets, and while Jones is hot now, he may not remain that way for the duration of the season.

You might as well grab him and start him while he's relevant. Against the St. Louis Rams this week, he's likely to have yet another big day, and with six teams on the bye chances are you have a need at wide receiver.

If that's the case, Jones (owned in 27 percent of Yahoo! leagues), is an ideal choice as a bye week fill-in. If he has another good game, you may even be able to sell him for a pretty penny to another owner should you only need him for just this week.

There's loads of short-term upside with Jones. If you snag him now, he's likely to make a significant contribution as a starting wide receiver for your fantasy team this week.
