Calvin Johnson and the Top Wide Receiver Plays in 2011
The 2011-12 NFL season is off to a hot start. The lockout is a distant memory. The Lions are undefeated, and the Colts have an imperfect season thus far.
Also, NFL offenses are dominating throughout the league. This offensive onslaught can most definitely be attributed to the amazing play of the league’s wide receivers.
Big name players such as Vincent Jackson and Greg Jennings are providing their perennial highlights, while the Lions' Calvin Johnson is cementing his name as a true blue elite player. At the very same time, little known players such as New York Giants WR Victor Cruz and San Fransisco’s Josh Morgan are lighting up highlight reels all over your nearby television.
Week 5 featured two of the top receptions by wide receivers, either of which could be catch of the year. Take a look, the debate’s up to you.
Denetrius Moore's Leaping Grab Against the Bills
1 of 20Back in Week 2, Oakland Raiders WR Denarius Moore made this unbelievable leaping grab against the Colts. Since the, he's slowly moved up the Raiders depth charts.
Josh Cribbs Elevates for an Amazing Play
3 of 20Browns WR Josh Cribbs is know mainly for his speed in the return game. But, this leaping catch against the Dolphins in Week 3 should prove to Colt McCoy that Cribbs should be his main target in Cleveland.
A.J. Green's Circus Catch Against the Bills
5 of 20Ah yes, A.J. Green. He looks like something special down in Cincinnati. He and Andy Dalton will be doing this a lot more in the coming years. Expect even more ridiculous receptions like this for Green in the future.
Wes Welker's 99-Yard TD Against the Dolphins
6 of 20Well, you can't have a top play list without including a Patriot, right? Wes Welker is on pace for a simply historic season.
Let's see if he can hold up these stats he's accrued. Meanwhile, enjoy his record tying reception from Week 1's Monday Night Football game.
Steve Smith Says 'Get off Me!'
7 of 20It looks like Steve Smith and Cam Newton are a mach made in heaven. They're connecting on all cylinders and have provided much hype for the hapless Panthers.
In this Newton-Smith connection, Smith throws defender Malcolm Jenkins off him and then runs his way to a score.
Kevin Walter's Lucky and Bobbly TD
8 of 20Kevin Walter got lucky, as the ball fell right into his lap. He then took it in for a score last week against the Saints.
Vincent Jackson's Diving Snag Against Miami
9 of 20Phillip Rivers and Vincent Jackson are clicking on all cylinders this season. Here's evidence to show that. It's a great diving TD snag by Jackson, from Rivers of course.
Mike Wallace's 81 Yard Bomb
10 of 20Easily one of the most electric and speedy receivers in the game, Mike Wallace is quickly making a name for himself in Pittsburgh. There have already been a handful of times we've seen this from Wallace. Here's another one.
Victor Cruz: Part I
11 of 20Talk about becoming a household name quickly. Giants WR, Victor Cruz, has made some flashy and somewhat unrealistic plays this season. He's still learning the game and working out his kinks, but keep an eye on him as he develops in New York.
Victor Cruz: Part II
12 of 20This catch against the Seattle Seahawks is even more ridiculous. If you're an NFL fan, you've already seen this catch. Watch it again. It's even more fun than the last time, I promise.
Tony Gonzalez Scores Another NFL Touchdown
13 of 20One of the greatest receivers and blockers in the game is Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez. He is always good for several highlights a season, Well, here's the big one thus far from him in 2010.
Against the Eagles, the Falcons made a statement, thanks to Gonzalez.
Vincent Jackson: Part II
14 of 20Yep, Jackson's back. This one-handed touchdown grab against the Patriots is simply incredible. He catches this perfectly thrown ball in load of traffic and finds a way to get his feet in across the plane.
Good thing this whole contract dispute is behind Jackson because if the Chargers get this much production out of him, expect a deep playoff run in San Diego.
Calvin Johnson Part I: Overtime in Minnesotta
15 of 20Don't even get me started on Megatron. He and quarterback Matt Stafford have made all the right moves and plays to make the Detroit Lions a perfect 5-0 this season. He's provided highlight after highlight and helped his Lions come back from twenty points down at halftime twice.
This catch in Minnesota helped cap the comeback the Lions mounted.
Calvin Johnson Part II: Comeback in Tampa Bay
16 of 20Remember this one? All the magic started right here, in Tampa. This unbelievable TD reception by Calvin Johnson helped complete the Lions comeback win against the Buccaneers.
Calvin Johnson Part III: The Comeback Catch
17 of 20In another amazing comeback win, this time against the Dallas Cowboys, Megatron led the charge. This absolutely jaw-dropping catch helped spark the Lions' incredible comeback in Week 4.
Just take a look. He's in triple coverage and still out jumps everyone for the ball.
Calvin Johnson Part IV:
18 of 20Two more simply amazing grabs for touchdown against Minnesota helped another comeback to be complete. Where would the Lions be without Calvin Johnson? Not undefeated, that's for sure.
Jimmy Graham's Amazing Catch
19 of 20This guy is turning out to be one of the upcoming great tight ends. Having only played one year of college football, the Saints' Graham has the raw body and ability to be a great TE.
Watch this unbelievable snag against the Panthers earlier in the season.
Catch of the Year? Dwayne Bowe's Juggling TD
20 of 20My jaw was on the floor when I first saw this catch. It easily received my vote for catch of the year, right there with Cruz's juggling snag.
Dwayne Bowe and the Chiefs have been having an average season at best, but this catch won't ever be forgotten.
