Big Ten Weak Another Year ? Or Are They ?

Kiah JacksonDec 4, 2008

Is the Big Ten really as weak as everyone keeps saying? Let's take a look at some interesting details.

The Big Ten has seven teams with winning records, which is the same as the Big 12, and is higher than most conferences other than the ACC & SEC, which have eight if you count 6-6. I don't, but I did in this article to keep everyone happy.

Everyone is talking about the Big 12 and the SEC as being the best conferences, in a certain degree they are right, but what I'm saying is that the Big 10 is not nearly as weak as everyone is saying.

Lets talk offense for a moment. Instantly you think Big 12, as you should. The numbers the Big 12 put up are just amazing. Oklahoma averages 556.7 yards per game, T Tech 536.2, and even Missouri 509.4.

The Big 12 has five of the top 10 offenses in the country, with Nebraska rounding out to spot 11.

When it comes to quarterbacks, the Big 12 is the favorite with no one even in a close 2nd.

Running backs....gotta go Big 10 here—the Big Ten has two of the three top rushers in the country, including the nations only back to rush for over 100 yards in every singe game this year, Iowa's Shonn Green.

I don't know about you, but don't people in football generally preach it starts up front with a run game? Penn State is sitting 11th in PPG (points per game), and Penn State & Illinois are in the top 25 for YPG (yards per game).

Now we can move on to defense, where the Big 12 looks like it has no defense, every team scores 40 points and still loses by a touchdown.

As for the SEC, this is where real defense is played, you can say. The SEC has two teams in the top 10, counting Alabama, which is third, allowing under 11.5 points a game.

As for the Big Ten, well here we are again—we have three of the top 10 in the country allowing points including Penn State, Ohio State, and Iowa. Allowing yards, the Big Ten still holds two here in the top 10 with Iowa just hitting 12th in the country.

Texas is the only Big 12 team in the top 25 for points allowed and yards given up per game. Not one Big 12 school is in the top 25..... Texas is the closest, falling to 50th.

Number of schools per conference ranking in BCS Top 25

Big 12 - 5

Big Ten - 4

ACC - 4

SEC - 3

Mountain West - 3

Big East - 2

Pac 10 - 2

WAC - 1

MAC - 1

So when you want to say the Big 12 is the best conference I tend to disagree, the most exciting yes but the best football no....I can't put a conference with little to no defense as the best conference. I'm not saying the Big 10 is the best either but we play both sides of football as well as the SEC.

I personally believe that the SEC has the best conference in football. I'm just tired of hearing that the Big 10 is a weak conference, stats speak for themselves I don't have to argue for them anymore.

You always have defense. Big Arm QB's can have a bad game and an offense can flop, but a good defense trumps everything else.

I know we have all heard this and why is that? Cause its true... offense wins games, but defense wins championships. Which is why since 2002 the teams we see in the National Championship have been teams like LSU, USC, and Ohio State. These are teams who always have a great defense.
