NFL Predictions: 20 Burning Questions Heading into Week 6

David LevinOct 12, 2011

Hey there, all you Bleacher Report fans. We are back for another week of "Burning Questions" as we head into Week 6 of the NFL.

Weren't we just getting our first taste of football last week? It sure seems like it.

Now, the Broncos have a new starting quarterback (no surprise there), the Colts are still winless (oh, boy!) and the Jaguars have a new punter (like that will make things better in the River City). Anything else would just be gravy. But this is Bleacher Report, and well, there are a lot of questions left unanswered.

So, without listening to another Deion Sanders rant about the state of the Cowboys, let's get to it, shall we?

20. Is Jim Caldwell Feeling as Much Heat as Other NFL Coaches?

1 of 20

I used to think he wasn't, but now I have to say yes!.

The problems that exist in Indianapolis have been exposed with the departure of Peyton Manning because if his injury.

This team should have two wins this season, but they cannot seem to put it all together.

Caldwell was hand-picked by Tony Dungy to replace him when he retired, but now that Dungy has been away from the game for a few years, it is time to start thinking about whether a change is needed again in Indy.

19. Are the New York Jets in a Free Fall?

2 of 20

No, but it could be better.

Rex Ryan is a great motivator who wants to go to "ground-and-pound" football with the running game being the focal point of this team.

Does this mean he has lost confidence in his quarterback Mark Sanchez? No, but it may mean he realizes the things that got the Jets to the last two AFC Championship games need to be used more for this team to have a chance at reaching that goal again.

And by the way, I personally don't think Sanchez is the answer in New York.

18. Should Darren McFadden Get MVP Consideration?

3 of 20

Right now, he is one of the five best players in the NFL.

McFadden is showing the brilliance that made him a runner-up in the Heisman voting two years in a row.

He is the spark the Raiders have been missing since Marcus Allen was in his prime. His running is taking the pressure off the passing game and allowing the Raiders' young receivers to play up to their potential.

McFadden is the real deal.

17. Is Jared Allen the NFL's Defensive MVP Right Now?

4 of 20

Well, his 8.5 sacks speaks volumes about his play on a team that has Allen, Adrian Peterson and very little else.

Maybe the team's first win of the season this past Sunday will light a fire under the players, but Allen has been playing like a man on a mission so far this season.

16. How Tough Is Ben Roethlisberger?

5 of 20

As tough as any quarterback I have seen play.

I admit that I am not a fan of the man personally, but I am a fan of his play and his grit and his determination.

He plays hurt, he leads by example on the field and he makes the tough play when his teammates need him to.

It looks like Big Ben finally grew up.

15. Why Are the 49ers Flying Under the Radar?

6 of 20

They hired a new coach in Jim Harbaugh that was pretty high-profile. They are in a weak NFC West Division, and they are beating the likes of Philadelphia and Tampa Bay and no one is really talking about them.

Maybe that is a good thing.

The 49ers look like they could be contenders this year, but it is still early. Alex Smith is playing better, Frank Gore is leading the ground charge and the defense is coming up big.

Looks like the Bay Area may have another winner.

14. Do the Jaguars Really Think Changing Punters Will Solve Their Woes?

7 of 20

I hope not.

You know the Jaguars and I are not on speaking terms right now.

They did the right thing in cutting Matt Turk and signing Nick Harris Tuesday. But there are other things the Jaguars must consider.

They inked Mike Thomas to a long term deal. They inked Montell Owens to a contract extension. Did anyone in the front office think to maybe, oh I don't know, find another receiver to sign with all the salary cap space they have?

The punting situation needed help. Now help the other areas of the team.

13. How Hot Is That Seat for Andy Reid Now?

8 of 20

A bit hotter than last week, I bet.

Sooner or later, this team has to catch fire. The offense is good and has plenty of weapons. There is no reason to see this team not win.

This team lost to a very good Buffalo Bills squad, but it needs to start winning now or the whispers about Reid may become loud voices.

12. Will Peyton Hillis Get Traded by the Browns?

9 of 20

With there being a question about his toughness and commitment to playing football in Cleveland, the Madden 11 cover boy (is it the curse?) could be out of Cleveland.

That would be a shame, because quarterback Colt McCoy sure needs him if the team is to go anywhere.

11. Is Calvin Johnson the Best Receiver in the NFL?

10 of 20

He just may be. But there are a few receivers who may argue with that assessment in Atlanta and New England, as well as maybe in Carolina and Buffalo and Arizona.

Johnson is having a Jerry Rice-like season, and he is helping the Lions become one of the great stories of this NFL season.

Is he the best? Let's see after 16 games and where the Lions finish in the NFC with teams like the Saints, Packers and 49ers.

10. Could There Be a Jon Gruden Sighting in Miami Before Long?

11 of 20

The idea of "Chucky" in Miami just seems to fit.

But then again, there are teams in Jacksonville, Indianapolis and other NFL cities that would say they like the fit of Gruden on their sidelines as well.

Right now, Gruden is staying put at ESPN and Monday Night Football until he decides he wants to test the NFL waters again.

9. Which Is the Best Team in the AFC Right Now?

12 of 20

Why do you put me on the spot like this?

If I had to pick one team, regardless of the division opponent, I would go with Baltimore.

I like what they do on defense and special teams. The offense, led by Ray Rice on the ground, is solid and Joe Flacco is maturing into a solid pro quarterback.

Ray Lewis and Ed Reed still play at such a high level on defense, and let's not forget Haloti Ngata and Terrell Suggs to help cause havoc, as well.

8. Is the AFC South Anybody's to Win?

13 of 20

I want to say yes, but then I see Indianapolis and Jacksonville and think otherwise.

Tennessee and Houston are better teams, but they have flaws just like everyone else.

I think Matt Schaub will really miss Andre Johnson, and Matt Hasselbeck is the veteran passer who can take the Titans to the playoffs, but they also have holes with the running game and the loss of Kenny Britt.

7. Will Buffalo Be in the Playoffs This Year?

14 of 20

If they keep this up, yes.

They have beaten New England and Philadelphia so far this year and lost to a better Cincinnati team.

The offense is strong, and the defense is getting better.

I think they can be one of the wild card teams in the AFC.

6. Did the Packers Defense Finally Show Up?

15 of 20

Maybe it was the Super Bowl hangover or something.

The Packers came back to beat the Falcons, and the defense held the high-powered Dirty Birds to 14 points.

If the defense finally did wake up, look out!

5. How Good Will Andy Dalton and AJ Green Be Together

16 of 20

Pretty darn good. I like the future of the NFL with Matt Stafford and Calvin Johnson, Matt Ryan and Roddy White and this combination.

The fact they are young and connecting now is a sign they have a chance to be one of the best as long as they are in the NFL together.

4. Could Detroit and Green Bay Both Be Undefeated on Thanksgiving Day?

17 of 20

Let's not look that far ahead. There is still more than a month of football to play.

But both are the cream of the NFL crop right now.

3. Can Denver Win with Tim Tebow?

18 of 20

His delivery is ugly.

His footwork needs help.

His attitude is stellar.

His intangibles bring a spark to this team.

If Tebow can't get Denver a few victories, then there is a problem. But he still needs a lot of work.

2. What Happened on Monday Night?

19 of 20

We saw a Chicago team give a lead up and a Detroit team prove once again they are great at coming back from a deficit.

Detroit is for real, and while Jay Cutler played a good game, he could not escape the Detroit defense.

But you could not have asked the Chicago quarterback to play a better game under those circumstances.

1. Who Needs to Really Step Up This Season and Play?

20 of 20

I think it has to be Chris Johnson.

He held out of the Titans preseason and asked to be played like a "playmaker."

We have not seen anything like that from him yet.

And while the money was tacked onto the end of his contract, it does not mean he should be a playmaker what money kicks in a few years from now.

The Titans need him now.
