ESPN NFL Power Rankings Week 6: 3 Teams ESPN Has out of Place in Week 6

Gabe ZaldivarOct 11, 2011

ESPN once again put the heads of their NFL gurus together to deliver another week of power rankings. Now we will tear it apart and tell you what they got wrong.

Before we tell you what three teams they got wrong, we have to issue a disclaimer that this is an exercise in picking nits.

There are not a great deal of gross errors. The ESPN Power Rankings do a good job of offering a fairly accurate barometer of the NFL landscape on a weekly basis. This just wouldn't be the sports world if we didn't pick apart every last ranking.

ESPN has created the discussion, and now we will end it. Here are three teams that are just not in the right place they should be. Let's start from the bottom so we can get the trash teams out of the way first.

1. St. Louis Rams: Ranked 31st, Should Be 32nd

Let the over-analysis begin. The great part about sports is that you can find interest in the worst of teams. This is especially true in the NFL where the Colts and Rams offer us the question, who is the worst in football?

The fact that the Colts showed heart and defensive pressure three weeks ago against the Steelers gives them the edge as a better team than the Rams. St. Louis looks far too inexperienced and confused to mount any wins anytime soon.

2. Chicago Bears: Ranked 18th, Should Be 17th

Here is a fun little question posed by the power rankings. Who is a better team: the Chicago Bears or New York Jets? With recent results, a better question would be who is worse?

Both teams have placed atrocious lines on the field. However, the Bears have had a slightly more difficult schedule to deal with, losing to the Saints, Packers and Lions. Those are some top-five juggernauts.

The Jets' wins against the Jaguars and Cowboys coupled with a loss to the Raiders is not as impressive.

3. San Francisco 49ers: Ranked 9th, Should Be 8th

The Steelers win on Sunday was impressive, but it hardly had me forget about the previous couple of weeks. This defense is still suspect, and the injuries will continue to haunt them.

I also think the 49ers win over the Eagles should outweigh what the Steelers did in Week 5. Philadelphia needed that win to right the ship and were demoralized by the ground game. The 49ers have far more swagger than Pittsburgh right now.
