LeBron Wants To Play Football with the NBA Players Locked Out?

Aaron McKinneyOct 11, 2011

I just heard that John Clayton received a text from LeBron James asking when the deadline for free agency was. He replied that the trade deadline was this week and that until the ball is kicked off at the Super Bowl, game on for free agents. So, would anybody like a 6-foot 9-inch, 260-pound tight end with sick athleticism?

My first impulse, as a Buffalo Bills fan, was for them to sign him. You think Calvin Johnson presents mismatches? Imagine what LeBron would create. He was all-state in football back in Ohio. He ran a 4.4 in high school and has a 44 inch vertical leap. It's not as if he doesn't have a clue here, either.

Yes, things are different, but what would prevent him from pulling this off? Even a short dump off could take on a new meaning. Remember what Jeremy Shockey was capable in his younger days? LeBron has four inches, 20-25 pounds and world class speed over him.

Buffalo hasn't had a tight end since the early 1990's. They could really use another weapon, especially since they have most of their wide receivers making up what looks like a MASH unit. Buffalo also has a bye week coming after their game against the NY Giants this week. If they get him inked soon, they could essentially have him practice for almost two full weeks.

Now, I understand this could just be a publicity stunt, but what's to stop teams from contacting him? Imagine what David Stern's initial response to hearing this was. Other players could follow. Most of these players have already proven they don't want to go play in the European leagues.

The latest news not only has the first two weeks of the regular season cancelled, but there is talk of losing an entire season or more. That's shocking. I know NBA players make lots of money, but remember, they have to support what they have built with their millions. Some of them have business ventures outside of basketball and many of them are just as good of athletes as NFL skill players and defensive backfield players.

I just really can't imagine an NFL linebacker or safety trying to cover him, even the best. Even the fastest and largest of each wouldn't have a chance over them. As I said before, Calvin Johnson is creating problems and LeBron is far larger than him with the same speed. Maybe it's time to extend a flier to LeBron to join the Bills.
