NFL Power Rankings: Detroit Lions and 3 Teams That Will Continue to Surge

T.J. McaloonOct 11, 2011

The NFL season is starting to head towards its halfway point and there are some teams that are starting to pull away from the pack. Yes, the NFL is rich with parity, as six of its division leaders are all teams that didn’t make the playoffs last year.

In fact, out of the five teams that are either 4-1 or better, four of them had records below .500 last year.

Your team can turn around its fortunes through the NFL Draft, free agency and from playing a weaker schedule the following year after a poor year.

This year, there are teams that were bad last year that are starting to separate themselves from the rest of their division, or, the conference.

Week 6 has three of these teams playing in games that will see them continue the winning ways that their fans have gotten accustomed to through five games.

Detroit Lions

Detroit has been the talk of the NFL through five games this year. The Lions boast a perfect 5-0 record—they have one of the best offenses in the league and they have a young team.

Those are three attributes that not many of the other teams in the NFL can claim.

They have another hot team this week, in the San Francisco 49ers. The game between these two surprising teams favors the Lions this week, as it’s a home game for the Lions, they have the more talented offense, and their defense will be able to get more pressure on the quarterback than the 49ers.

Detroit goes 6-0 this week after a close win over the 49ers.

Buffalo Bills

The Bills are playing at a level that their fans haven’t seen since the days when Jim Kelly, Thurman Thomas and Andre Reed were leading the Bills offense. Sitting at 4-1 and first in the AFC East, the Bills are in control of a very competitive division.

This week, the Bills travel to play a New York Giants team that is coming off of an upset loss at home to the woeful Seattle Seahawks.

The Bills will win this game using their passing attack, instead of their running game, which led them in last week’s victory over Philadelphia.

Washington Redskins

Washington is coming into this game fresh from its bye week. The Redskins will be rested and well prepared for a Philadelphia Eagles team that is in a state of turmoil. They won’t score a lot of points on the Eagles this week, but their defense will put pressure on Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, forcing him to throw errant passes.

These teams will continue to surprise their fanbases this week, making them start to think seriously about a playoff run—something these fans haven’t had a chance to think about in a long, long time.
