LeBron James: Should NFL Teams Woo King James During NBA Lockout?

Kyle VassaloOct 11, 2011

With regular season games already being wiped out by the NBA lockout the possibility of many players going overseas is becoming more and more likely.

LeBron James is one basketball player who may even attract NFL suitors—a scenario that a Tweet from LeBron to John Clayton suggests is a very real possibility.

People have wondered for some time what kind of football player James would be. At 6'8" 250 pounds, he would be a matchup nightmare.

While many suggest tight end would be the best fit for James, wide receiver seems like a much better fit.

Would a team gamble on James though? He hasn't played football since high school. Can we really expect James to get by on athleticism alone?

The fact of the matter is, it doesn't matter whether James tanks or becomes a major factor. He's worth every penny an NFL team would be willing to shell out for him.

If nothing else, James puts fans in seats. He is unlikely to go to a completely hopeless team like the St. Louis Rams, but what about a team like the Carolina Panthers?

With King James and Newton on the field at the same time, even a losing Panthers team becomes must-see TV.

Teams that are excelling won't want the distraction and teams in complete squalor probably won't be able to woo James, but somewhere in the middle lies a very real possibility.

The Raiders and Bengals are two teams who don't necessarily need a receiver, but neither team shies away from taking a gamble on a player.

LeBron will bring in revenue. If James is serious about the NFL, and he makes it known that he is available, his phone may not ring off the hook, but you can expect at least a couple teams to bring him in and kick the tires.

He's not going to come in and take over games, but it would be a very popular move from a PR standpoint.

It will be a media circus and hey, maybe he'll even catch a ball or two along the way.
