NFL Power Rankings Week 6: 8 NFL Teams Already out of Playoff Contention

Zach KruseOct 11, 2011

We're only five weeks into the football season, but already a fourth of the 32 NFL teams are seemingly out of playoff contention.

Here are the eight franchises that should be thinking of 2012:

Minnesota Vikings

The got their first win last Sunday, but that doesn't erase the boatload of problems these Vikings have. Minnesota has gotten very little from an aging and ineffective Donovan McNabb, who fans still booed during the Vikings' rout of the Cardinals.

St. Louis Rams

The bye week actually saw the Rams get less healthy, which is another troubling sign for a team that had high expectations but stumbled to an 0-4 start. With the undefeated Packers looming in Week 6, the Rams 2011 season might end at Lambeau Field.

Indianapolis Colts

The Colts have stayed competitive despite losing Peyton Manning, but that hasn't translated into wins in 2011. Indy let a very winnable game slip through the cracks last Sunday as the Chiefs came back from three scores down to stun the Colts. At 0-5, the Colts have almost zero hope of making it back to the playoffs this season.

Carolina Panthers

For all the heroics of Cam Newton in 2011, his Panthers haven't been able to turn their offensive revival into a better win-loss record. At 1-4 in the NFC South, the season is nearly over. But the future is clearly bright for the Panthers with Newton in charge.

Miami Dolphins

Losing your first four games is bad enough, but when your starting quarterback goes down with a season-ending injury, there's simply going to be very little chance of turning around your record. That's the case in Miami, as Chad Henne was lost to a shoulder injury.

Denver Broncos

Love or hate Tim Tebow, he's not going to be the guy that turns the 1-4 Broncos from the basement dweller they are into playoff contenders. Denver is already three (but technically four) games behind the 4-1 Chargers.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars appear to have a lame duck coach in Jack Del Rio and a rookie quarterback that has struggled to pick up the NFL game so far. At 1-4, Jacksonville has lost four straight and is last in the NFL in passing yard.

Arizona Cardinals

I wasn't going to write the Cardinals off in the NFC West until I saw them sleep walk through the first 20 minutes in Minnesota. That was unacceptable anyway you slice it. And in all reality, Kevin Kolb has been a huge disappointment for Arizona through five weeks.
