Tim Tebow: Did John Fox Make the Right Call in Anointing Broncos QB Starter?

Denver Broncos head coach John Fox had to do something. With his team floundering at 1-4 and Kyle Orton not getting it done at quarterback, Fox announced on Tuesday that Tim Tebow would take over under center for his team.

No matter what you think of Tebow's long-term abilities as a starting quarterback in the NFL, you have to realize Fox made the right move for his franchise at this time.

Orton certainly fits the mold of your typical NFL quarterback much better than Tebow, but now that Denver has fallen almost completely out of the AFC West chase, the team has nothing to lose.

Through the first five games, Orton completed 91 of 155 passes (58.7 percent) for 979 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. His quarterback rating of 75.7 ranks 28th out of the 32 passers who qualify league-wide.

Tebow certainly wasn't statistically impressive during Denver's 29-24 loss to the San Diego Chargers on Sunday. But he did lead the Broncos on two scoring drives and provided a spark that got the team back in the game after he took over at halftime.

The Florida product completed four of 10 passes for 79 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also carried the ball six times for 38 yards and a touchdown. Though 28 of his passing yards came on a screen pass to Knowshon Moreno, Tebow didn't look too rattled under center and was able to avoid the pass rush by using his legs.

Sitting at 1-4 after a disappointing performance by Orton to open the season and with the team's fans begging for Tebow to see the field, Fox made the only decision he could. Right now Tebow is the Denver's only quarterback under contract for 2012, which means the Broncos have to find out what he can do.

While the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner may not be the guy for Denver in the long-term, at this point making the move to him was the right choice.
