NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Teams That Are Better Than Their Records

John RozumOct 11, 2011

Regardless of what a team's record may be, being better than the indicated record can be a deceiving advantage.

For one, it will could cause opponents to underestimate them and it also provides that team with even more motivation to prove their ability.

So to that end, here are three teams who are better than what you see in the win-loss column.

Houston Texans (3-2)

The home loss to the Oakland Raiders was difficult to swallow, but in almost squeaking out a win without Andre Johnson and linebacker Mario Williams, Houston displayed they can still compete against formidable opponents.

The next two weeks will really test how good the Texans are, as they play at Baltimore and Tennessee who have a combined record of 6-3.

It will be hard without Johnson and Williams, but even splitting those two games would be impressive.

Oakland Raiders (3-2)

Had it not been for the Buffalo Bills converting two-straight fourth downs in Week 2, the Oakland Raiders would be 4-1 right now.

That said, the Raiders showed a lot of mental toughness in their road win over Houston after owner Al Davis passed away.

They've also played a much more difficult schedule than current AFC West leader San Diego. When the Silver and Black hit the midseason stretch after their bye, Oakland could very well be 6-2 heading into their Week 10 matchup against the Chargers in southern California.

Chicago Bears (2-3)

Although the Chicago Bears' two wins came against the Falcons and Panthers (both combined for a 3-7 record), all three of their losses are to the NFL's three best teams (Green Bay, New Orleans, Detroit).

All three teams have a combined record of 14-1, and Chicago proved last night they can compete against great teams on the road.

If the Bears give that kind of effort the rest of this season, it's quite possible Chicago could sneak into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

Just because they're in the NFL's best division doesn't mean they won't be in the postseason hunt. There's no shame in having three losses to the league's top three Super Bowl contenders.
