Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups: Victor Cruz and 3 Must-Have WRs

T.J. McaloonOct 11, 2011

This week in the NFL, there are teams with bye weeks that will kill your fantasy football team in the wide receiver position.

If you have Cardinals Larry Fitzgerald, Chiefs Dwayne Bowe or Broncos Brandon Lloyd, you will be searching your waiver wire for replacements.

Or, even worse, if you happened to suffer an injury to a fantasy superstar at the wide receiver position, you will need to find some relief, for this week and for the rest of the season.

Well, don’t worry, scared and confused fantasy owner—there are options still left after five weeks of the NFL season. There are players who will put up points for your struggling fantasy squad.

So, step off of that ledge, desperate fantasy owner. Here are three receivers to fill the void at the position.

Victor Cruz, New York Giants

Cruz exploded on the fantasy football scene two weeks ago against the Philadelphia Eagles, scoring twice against the “Dream Team”. He then had a game of nothing the following week against the Cardinals. Then he came back to life against the Seahawks last week.

Cruz’s big game against the Seahawks solidified his position as a must-own receiver for fantasy owners. He has found his way into the Giants offense, as he is second on the team in targets, receptions and yards.

James Jones, Green Bay Packers

Jones is starting to establish himself as the Packers deep threat in their offense. Last week, Jones’ touchdown was a 70-yard bomb from Aaron Rodgers.

That makes for back-to-back weeks with touchdowns from the receiver.

In three prior weeks this year, Jones had six receptions for only 40 yards and no touchdowns. The last two weeks, he has eight catches for 188 yards and two touchdowns.

As long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy, Jones has a great chance to score every week.

Kevin Walter, Houston Texans

When Texans receiver Andre Johnson went down with a hamstring injury two weeks ago, fantasy owners scrambled to find a receiver to fill in the void while Johnson was injured.

Last week, against the Raiders, it looked like Kevin Walter is going to step up as the Texans top receiver target. He led the Texans receivers, catching five balls for 81 yards and a touchdown.

These three receivers should be available in your fantasy league, but they will not save your team. They will do a good enough job to fill the void during bye weeks or until your main receivers come back from being injured.
