NFL Power Rankings Week 6: Who Are League's Top 10 Teams?

Chris TrapassoOct 11, 2011

Even with the amount of unpredictability there has been this season, we are starting to see a more defined group of the NFL's top 10 teams after five weeks of play.

The group of elite teams consist of some usual suspects and surprising upstarts, as well as teams that have been toward the bottom of the league for quite some time.

Here's my top 10 after the Lions win on Monday Night Football...

1. Green Bay Packers

Is there any questioning this? The defending Super Bowl champs are moving the ball better than ever with Aaron Rodgers making his case for MVP of the league early in the season.

The defense isn't stopping teams at the rate it did last year, but they're making enough plays to give the offense a chance to win games. In this day and age in the NFL, that's all you can ask for.

2. New Orleans Saints

I'm telling you, the road win against the Panthers was a very good one. Carolina is not a team that's easy to dominate, because of Cam Newton and Steve Smith. Drew Brees orchestrated another fourth quarter, game-winning drive and was calm and collected throughout. That Thursday Night opener really was a battle of the two best teams.

3. Detroit Lions

I knew I wasn't crazy for slating the Lions this high before their Monday Night game against the Bears. Detroit's offense isn't as consistent as some of the other clubs, but as we saw last night, they can put points on the board in a hurry.

If Jahvid Best continues to mature, watch out. We already know what Calvin Johnson and Ndamukong Suh bring every game.

4. New England Patriots

After their humiliating loss to the Bills in Week 3, the Patriots have taken care of business against the Raiders and Jets. They weren't dominating and Tom Brady didn't throw for 500 yards in each contest, but they incorporated the running game to their offense and got more pressure on the opposing quarterback.

5. Baltimore Ravens

Even though the Ravens had a bye in Week 5, their Monday Night Football devastation of the New York Jets is still fresh in my mind. Scariest defense in the NFL today. Joe Flacco needs to improve, but Ray Rice is playing at an All-Pro level.

6. Buffalo Bills

Talk about a running back playing at an All-Pro level, how about Fred Jackson? You ready for some legit MVP-worthy statistics? The Bills runner has 712 combine yards from scrimmage (third behind Wes Welker and Matt Forte) and only LeSean McCoy has run for more first downs through five games. The defense leads the league in takeaways and Ryan Fitzpatrick is converting in the red zone.

7. San Francisco 49ers

Jim Harbaugh has changed the culture in San Francisco. They aren't playing flashy football, they're getting it done by running the football, playing sound, stifling defense and quarterback Alex Smith is finally starting to live up to his potential. (Has this guy had enough different coaching staffs?)

8. San Diego Chargers

They haven't been overly impressive in any of their four wins, but any Chargers fan out there will take early season victories after what we've seen from San Diego the last few seasons.

Philip Rivers is once again, quietly, amassing MVP-type numbers and Ryan Mathews is getting more comfortable within the offense.

9. Pittsburgh Steelers

And we were ready to write off the defending AFC champion. A hobbled Ben Roethlisberger tossed five touchdown passes against a 3-1 Titans team that was ready to make a statement in Pittsburgh.

James Harrison was out, but an angry Steelers defense flexed it's muscles and turned in a performance we're used to seeing.

10. Oakland Raiders

Round of applause for the Raiders, who picked up an emotional win on the road this week in Houston.

They proved they can win football games without Darren McFadden going off, which for me is a huge step.
