NFL Power Rankings Week 6: St. Louis Rams and 5 Teams Doomed to Lose

Zachary D. RymerOct 11, 2011

One of the lesser aspects of the whole predetermination thing is that some people are just plain doomed.

Thankfully, predetermination does not apply in the NFL, which is awesome, of course, as it allows us to use that "any given Sunday" phrase to rationalize just about everything.

In this instance, I plan on using it to rationalize my beliefs that there are some teams in the NFL that actually are doomed. I might be creating some kind of apocalyptic paradox in doing so, but I'm going to do it anyway.

With that in mind, here's a discussion about five teams that are doomed to lose in Week 6. While we're at it, we'll discuss my Week 6 power rankings. Cross your fingers and hope the world doesn't implode.

5. Dallas Cowboys (at New England Patriots)

The Cowboys are the one team on this list that doesn't reside in the lower third of my power rankings. In fact, they're in the top half at No. 16.

Sadly, the Cowboys will probably move down a few pegs in my Week 7 rankings, as they will be going up against the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The good news is that the Cowboys have had a whole extra week to prepare for the Pats. The bad news is that the Pats are a far superior team. The Cowboys will find out firsthand, and it won't be pretty.

4. Indianapolis Colts (at Cincinnati Bengals)

The Colts may be 0-5, but I have something of a soft spot for them because they've come very close to getting in the win column in each of the last three weeks. Because of that soft spot, the Colts do not occupy the No. 32 spot in my power rankings.

However, they might after Week 6. The Colts have to travel to Cincinnati to take on the Bengals, who are off to a surprising 3-2 start in the early goings.

I have no idea how or why the Bengals are 3-2, but it's clear they are better than we thought they were going to be. At the very least, they're better than the Colts and will show as much on Sunday.

3. Miami Dolphins (at New York Jets)

The Dolphins are 0-4, and they are dead last in my Week 6 power rankings. Anybody who disagrees is wrong.

However, if you insist, I guess I'll remind you that the Dolphins are going to be 0-5 very soon. After taking a week off to lick their wounds in Week 5, the Dolphins now have to travel to New Y—er, New Jersey to take on the New York Jets.

At 2-3, the Jets are in a place they don't want to be and didn't think they would be. Yet, it's worth noting that those three losses all came on the road to very good teams.

On Monday night, the Jets will be at home and will be playing against maybe the worst team in the NFL. Sounds like a can't-miss recipe for success.

2. Jacksonville Jaguars (at Pittsburgh Steelers)

Remember when the Jaguars were 1-0?

Me neither. All that matters now is that they've lost four games in a row, and that they have settled in for a long season of watching Blaine Gabbert grow. I have them at No. 26 now, but I only expect them to sink lower as the season goes along.

On Sunday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will aid the process. They looked pretty bad for a while there, but they looked really good against the Tennessee Titans in Week 5. My guess is they'll handle the Jags with ease.

1. St. Louis Rams (at Green Bay Packers)

I have the Rams a rung higher than the Colts at No. 30, but they could easily be as low as No. 31 or No. 32. They're that bad.

Unfortunately for the Rams, things are going to be much worse on Sunday. They have to play the Green Bay Packers, who are a perfect 5-0. Making matters worse, the Rams will have to play them at Lambeau Field.

Here's a hint: Don't bet on the Rams. No matter how insane the spread may be.
