New England Patriots Bring Back Dan Gronkowski, Older Brother of Rob Gronkowski

Tony SantorsaOct 10, 2011

Apparently the New England Patriots realized that two Gronks are better than one.

The team has reportedly re-signed tight end Dan Gronkowski, the older brother of Rob. Gronkowski will be filling the roster spot that offensive tackle Tom Welch once held prior to the team cutting ties with him Monday afternoon.

Gronkowski has already spent time with the Patriots but was waived on Sept. 23. The tight end dressed for a couple of New England's games but failed to record any receptions.

The reasoning behind this transaction is that Welch was primarily used as a blocking tight end, despite being an offensive tackle. He was brought in to serve as an extra blocker in heavy packages. If you're going to have a third tight end on your roster, outside of Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez, then might as well actually have a player that plays tight end.

Dan stands in at 6'5" and 255 lbs and is naturally a blocking tight end, rather than his younger brother Rob, who is the ultimate tight end—someone that can block and be productive receiver.

Gronkowski will join the Patriots this Wednesday as the team will prepare for its Week 6 battle with the Dallas Cowboys

In the team's recent efforts to run the ball more and to be more balanced, the acquisition of Gronkowski makes perfect sense—not to mention that one Gronkowski is nowhere near enough.
