Oklahoma City Thunder: Will Kevin Durant's Team Dominate the Next Decade?
Every decade of basketball other than the '70s has had seemingly one dominant team. Most recently it was the Los Angeles Lakers, playing in their six NBA Finals and claiming four championships along the way.
While many will debate that the San Antonio Spurs were more dominant, I would argue they were more consistent. But consistency doesn't define a decade that fans will remember in years to come.
That being said, who does the next decade belong to?
The Lakers have gotten off to a decent start, as have the Mavericks, but unless either of those teams find themselves a new, young superstar, they may not have what it takes to compete at a high level throughout the decade.
Then there are the Bulls and the Heat, two teams with enough youth and star power to compete to the end of this decade and even past it. What comes of those teams remains to be seen.
My money, however, is on the Thunder. Why? Because they have one of the most impressively constructed teams; as well as one of the youngest.
I could probably write a book on how much I love the moves Sam Presti has made since becoming general manager and his intelligence is going to pay off soon enough.
With the core of Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Kendrick Perkins, James Harden and Serge Ibaka; as well as Eric Maynor, Thabo Sefolosha and Nate Robinson, there are plenty of reasons to like this team's chances.
And though they may still need another year until they are fully ready to play for a championship, the strides made during this year's playoffs was a preview of the potential of this team.
I firmly believe above all else, the most important attribute of a successful team is having a superstar that loves to play for his team. It's why the Mavericks, Spurs and Lakers have been so successful. Kevin Durant has repeatedly stated that he wants to be in Oklahoma City for as long as possible.
Thunder fans rest easy that this team will be competing at a high level for quite some time. And who knows, perhaps in a few years we'll look back and say that this decade belonged to Mr. Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder.
For now, sit back and just enjoy the ride.
