NFL Power Rankings: Jason Hanson and 3 Kickers Saving Your Fantasy Team

T.J. McaloonOct 10, 2011

In the world of football the kicker is the Rodney Dangerfield on the team, as in he gets no respect.

No matter what they may do, kickers are still pushed aside for the other skill positions, such as quarterback, running back, wide receiver and any of the players on defense who had a big hit, sack or interception.

But the kicker cannot only win your favorite NFL team a game with one play—they can also win you a fantasy football game. On the flipside, the kicker position can cost your team—both  in fantasy and real life—a victory by having a terrible game.

Coming into Monday Night Football between the Lions and Bears tonight, there will be fantasy football games won or lost because of Lions kicker Jason Hanson or Bears kicker Robbie Gould.

If you don’t have a good kicker on your team, you are missing out each week on 10 or more points.

Here are three kickers who will dominate in their performances coming up in Week 6 of the NFL season.

Jason Hanson, Detroit Lions

Hanson has been one of the best kickers in the NFL this year. He is averaging 11 points per game through four games of the season.

(Note: This could go up after Monday night’s performance.)

This high-powered Detroit Lions offense hosts the San Francisco 49ers in Week 6. The 49ers bring in a good defense that has a chance at stopping a lot of Lions drives inside of their 35-yard line.

If that's the case, then Hanson owners can expect a good number of field goals—and field goals of 50 yards or more.

Sebastian Janikowski, Oakland Raiders

On Sunday against the Houston Texans, Janikowski gave his fantasy owners not just one 50-yard field goal, not two 50-yard field goals, but THREE 50-yard field goals!

On top of those bombs, he was able to hit another field goal of 40 yards and an extra point.

For some leagues, that was a 20-point day—for the kicker.

Next week, Se-bas will be back home in Oakland as the Raiders play the Browns. Janikowski owners can expect this kicker to be able to hit another 50-yard kick if needed.

Mason Crosby, Green Bay Packers

Crosby plays on one of the best offenses in the NFL, which means he has a chance to score a lot every single Sunday.

On Sunday against the Falcons, Crosby kicked four field goals and two extra points. That’s 14 points that your team either had or you had scored against you.

With the Packers playing the Rams in Week 6, Crosby owners can expect another 14 or more points.

The three things these kickers have in common is that they are good for double-digit point totals almost every week.

But they will still get passed over for other free agents or other position players who are either must-have's or must-start's to save your team.

Rodney said it the best, "No respect."
