FSU Players Make Decision to Stop Tweeting as Problems Go Viral

Tim KeeneyJun 2, 2018

After suffering yet another embarrassing loss this week against Wake Forest, Florida State football players decided to make a change.

Start practicing more?

Nah.

Healthier diet?

Nope.

Changes to the depth chart?

Yeah, right.

Stop using Twitter and Facebook?

Well, actually, yes. That's what they've decided to do.

Of course. That's why the Seminoles are losing.

It can't possibly be the fact they are absolutely inept at running the football (2.7 yards per carry as a team). It couldn't be all the turnovers from E.J Manuel or the inability to force other teams into turnovers.

It's certainly not all the penalties, that's for sure.

The problem is Twitter. Players are too busy deciding what hash tag to use to help increase the wittiness of their tweet to be memorizing the playbook.

Talk about an all-time scapegoats. "It's Twitter's fault we're losing. I swear."

I realize social media can be a distraction. I know all too well the dangers of mixing an attempt of doing something productive with Facebook. It just doesn't work.

But this is football. These kids are getting full scholarships to play an awesome game. Some of them are working their way towards being paid for it.

You'd think if something were that important, these kids would be able to avoid Tweeting in the locker room 30 minutes before game time. You would think they could concentrate on the game without having to stop using social media completely.

In all honestly, I don't mind banning college teams from using social media, but come on kids, learn some self-control. Twitter is not the reason you're losing.

On the other hand, I do understand a large part of this decision is because of the negative feedback these kids are getting.

"

"A lot of it is just people having a chance to voice their opinions to us, said quarterback E.J Manuel. And obviously right now, a lot of it is kind of negative."

"

That's a fair point, but there's a "block" feature on Twitter and even privacy settings.

It's all about being smart. Don't use social media 30 minutes before a game. Don't use it when you have more important things to do. And don't be afraid to increase your privacy so crazy people can't contact you.

There are ways around this whole social media thing without completely ignoring it.

If you want to stop using social media, that's fine. Just don't blame your problems on it or expect some miraculous turnaround to come from the decision.
