Tim Tebow: Will Tebow Be a Reliable Fantasy QB?

Zachary D. RymerOct 10, 2011

We don't yet know if Tim Tebow is going to be the Denver Broncos' starting quarterback for the rest of the season. Head coach John Fox said (per the Los Angeles Times) that he hasn't even decided if Tebow will be his starter when the Broncos return from their Week 6 bye. That decision will come Tuesday.

These things being said, you and I both know that the writing is on the wall. Despite Fox's current indecision, one assumes he will come to the conclusion that starting Tebow in Week 7 and beyond is the best thing for the organization.

If and when that decision is made, fantasy owners across the union will have a decision of their own to make.

Should they trust Tebow as much as the Broncos are (see: may or may not be) willing to trust him?

Believe it or not, I actually don't think that would be such a bad idea.

Listen, we all know that Tebow is never going to be the most accurate passer this side of Aaron Rodgers. His mechanics are as funky as the pundits say they are, and this is going to be a problem for the foreseeable future.

But the dude has an uncanny ability to get in the end zone. He scored two touchdowns in one half of work on Sunday, and he scored seven touchdowns in the three starts he got at the end of last season. That's nine touchdowns in 14 quarters, which is not a bad rate at all.

As a bonus, five of these touchdowns came through the air, and four came on the ground. Quarterbacks who can get you points both through the air and on the ground are few and far between, but Tebow is going to be one of them if he is under center for the rest of the season.

The tradeoff is that Tebow will throw some interceptions, and he is going to get sacked. Neither of these things happened yesterday, but Tebow's style of play will lead to these things. We know he's not an accurate passer, and we know that there are times when he takes way too long to get rid of the football.

Now, none of this should lead you to believe that Tebow is going to be more reliable than Rodgers, Tom Brady, Drew Brees or any of the other fantasy goldmines that play quarterback. I'd classify Tebow more as a poor man's Cam Newton.

Which is not a bad thing. If you need a quarterback, and you missed out on Newton, I daresay Tebow could be your guy.
