Bears vs. Lions: Why Matt Forte Should Tear Up Detroit's Defense

Chris TrapassoOct 10, 2011

America is ready to watch the high-powered Detroit Lions offense tonight, especially the ultra-talented, freak-of-nature Calvin Johnson.

I don't blame them—the guy is unbelievable and provides jaw-dropping catches every week.

Matthew Stafford is another big draw for this one.

The ball explodes out of his hand, and for once, he's healthy, and opposing defenses are paying dearly.

The Lions are 4-0, and all eyes are on them.

Don't forget Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte, though, a player who's already legitimized himself as a true NFL star.

He is in for a huge evening.

Here's why.

The Lions' defensive line is going to be attacking Jay Cutler all night. Chicago's offensive line has allowed 15 sacks through four games and are overmatched against Ndamukong Suh and Co. It's that simple. Getting to Cutler is imperative to creating turnovers and ultimately, beating the Bears.

Offensive coordinator Mike Martz has taken some heat for his slow-developing routes, but he isn't stupid. He knows how the Lions will attack.

What does that mean?

Lots of check downs to Forte.

Forte is hit-or-miss running the football. It's usually not his fault, it's just how it is. He had two yards on nine carries against the Packers, then accumulated 205 yards against the Panthers.

Will he have success running against the Lions' No. 17-ranked run defense?

Regardless, Forte is very reliable catching the football and gaining big chunks of yardage after the catch.

The Chicago Bears' coaching staff will look to get it to him in a variety of different ways.

We love the potential of Detroit's young and talented defense so much we tend to forget that they are susceptible to the big play.

I think the Lions win this game, but Forte should have a huge statistical evening.
