LeGarrette Blount Injury: Updates on Buccaneers' Week 6 Status and Fantasy Value

Tim DanielsOct 10, 2011

Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back LeGarrette Blount came out of Sunday's loss to the San Francisco 49ers with an injury to his left leg. Head coach Raheem Morris is playing the situation close to his vest, so Blount's status for the team's game against the New Orleans Saints is unclear.

Keep checking back to this page throughout the week for the latest news on his playing status and fantasy football value for Week 6.

As expected, LeGarrette Blount has been ruled out of this week's game against the Saints. He has not practiced all week and, according to Rotoworld.com, has been dealing with a Grade 2 tear in his MCL.

Blount's status for future games is also up in the air right now, but with a bye in Week 8 don't be shocked if they hold him out for next week against Chicago, though that is just speculation on my part.

LeGarrette Blount didn't practice today according to Pewter Report, and as a result is likely to miss this week's game. Blount's fantasy owners should have already acquired Earnest Graham who could see solid reps in his absence.

At this point, Blount owners should prepare for life without him for a couple of weeks.

According to J.P. Peterson of WQYK-AM 1010 in Tampa, LeGarrette Blount will miss several weeks of action while recovering from a Grade 2 MCL tear in his knee. The Buccaneers had kept the extent of his injury under wraps for most of the week, though head coach Raheem Morris acknowledged on Thursday that Blount has yet to practice this week.

The Bucs will certainly miss having Blount in the backfield, particularly with two games against the NFC South-leading Saints in their next three.

As far as the fantasy world is concerned, this latest bit of news gives Blount owners the unfortunate green light to drop the burly back from their rosters and makes Earnest Graham a good buy for anyone looking for solid production out of the backfield.

Things continue to look bleak for LeGarrette Blount's playing status this week.

Latest update from practice is that Blount is not on the field:

The Bucs, and even quarterback Josh Freeman, expect Earnest Graham to be the lead back this week.

This could create a bit of problem for Blount owners in the future. Should Graham play well the Bucs will certainly consider using the both of them more frequently.

Courtesy of the Buccaneers' official Twitter feed, we know that things weren't much better for Blount and his wounded knee on Wednesday:

Unfortunately, the word on Blount from the St. Petersburg Times is even worse. They say that Blount is "unlikely" to play on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. Taking his place will be 31-year-old Earnest Graham, who Bucs quarterback Josh Freeman has confidence in.

"You guys know Earnest has done everything for us,'' Freeman said. "Whether it's playing fullback, being the third down back and now this week he's going to get the majority of the reps, the majority of the carries. I mean, he's done it before...he's a guy we know can get it done.''

All things considered, it sounds like the Blount is going to be a no-go on Sunday. If you have him as a starter in your fantasy lineup, now is a good time to make a move.

While the news hasn't been encouraging regarding Blount, center Jeff Faine did offer a glimmer of hope with his comments to Joebucsfan.com:

"

I'm feeling like we should see him out there Sunday, based on how he was acting [after the game].

"

While we aren't sure how he was acting in the locker room, it's certainly a positive sign that coach Raheem Morris has refused to rule him out for next week against the Saints.

It sounds like Blount will be limited all week as the guessing game on his status for Sunday rolls on.

Legarrette Blount's status is seemingly more in doubt today after head coach Raheem Morris gave an update on his status to Tampa Bay Online.

"

He's another guy that left the game early and got some nicks. And I don't want to rule him out, but . . . it'll be next-man up and (whoever that is will) be ready to go and he'll play and practice for us.

"

Expect Earnest Graham to get most of the carries if Blount cannot go, with a blend of Allen Bradford and Kregg Lumpkin on third down.

Tampa Bay could be without their star RB LeGarrette Blount Sunday.

"'I don't want to rule (Blount) out, but I'm not looking at him. It is what it is. Next man up. I'd like to get more detailed information on him. I'll call him day-to-day for now,'" according to St. Petersburg Times' Rodney Page.

Earnest Graham would start in his place.

The Pewter Report, which bills itself as “the source for inside news on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers,” tweeted that Morris is waiting for more information before he reveals the back's status for Week 6. Early week questions marks are rarely a good sign, though.

At this point, it looks like Blount will be listed as questionable at best. The Buccaneers could really use a victory against New Orleans, so he will do everything within his power to play. It will all depend on how his body reacts to treatment.
