Titans vs. Steelers Video: Watch Referees' Epic Fail
A good referee is always in constant communication with his fellow men in the black and white.
You don’t make a questionable call until you consult your entire team of officials.
Well, at least that’s what I thought before Sunday’s Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers game.
At Heinz Field yesterday, an angry Steelers squad was destroying the Titans late in the third quarter. After Chris Johnson scored a touchdown to cut the Pittsburgh lead to 28-10, they tried an onside kick to keep possession of the ball and get right back in the game.
Titans kicker Rob Bironas dropped an impressive onside kick and there was a frantic scrum for the ball…just like every other onside kick in football.
As two of the refs push the bodies aside to find the ball, two officials believed they had the correct call. At essentially the same exact moment, one ref threw the signal that it was the Steelers' ball, while the other was pointing in the direction of the Titans.
Both men thought they were right.
D’oh.
Eventually possession was given to the Titans on the Steelers 45-yard line. After reviewing the ball multiple times, it was the right call.
Too bad it really didn’t mater.
On the first play after the onside kick, Titans quarterback Matt Hasselbeck threw an interception to Steelers linebacker LaMar Woodley and Pittsburgh proceeded to cruise to victory.
The refs have a tough job and almost always make the right call. When they mess up like that, it’s hilarious.
There is a certain comedic element in referee gaffes that covers all sports. Watching the men that get blamed for your team's woes screw up like that brings a smile to everyone’s face.
This is a great example.
