College Football vs. the NFL: The Big Debate

Matthew WatkinsOct 10, 2011

This debate has gone on for years—the NFL and college football debate. I have debated among family and friends and I hear NFL this, NFL that, but I am a college guy and love my Ole Miss Rebels.

Now I enjoy watching NFL, have my fantasy football set up to play and love to watch my college boys go and play in the NFL and grow up there.

This article is all my opinion and a lot of you college football fans may agree with most that I say.  Feel free to drop a comment below on why you like the NFL more than college, or college football more than the NFL.

Players

1 of 12

Players are what make football. This is where talking goes on about who is the best quarterback in the AFC or SEC. Stuff like that is fun to talk about thanks to our great players.

NFL players are by far better than college players. That's that. But my thing on players from college to NFL is, in college you get to see players explode and play their heart out without getting paid the big bucks to do it. Think of Cam Newton—he was fun to watch.

Winner: NFL

Tradition

2 of 12

I want you to name an NFL team that has more tradition than any college football team. Pretty hard, isn't it? College steals tradition big time. From Hotty Toddy at Ole Miss to War Eagle at Auburn, college football has more tradition than your grandma's sweet tea.

Winner: College Football

Games

3 of 12

NFL games are usually fun to watch but you get no "Hey did you see that game?" for most NFL games. Probably 90 percent of NFL games can become boring within an hour.

College games are packed with more excitement than NFL games. The fans are louder and more supportive than NFL fans are for their team, and you get to see that amazing SEC defense play against that powerhouse offense.

Stadiums

4 of 12

All NFL stadiums are pretty much the same: a very large stadium with three huge decks with 100,000 nosebleed section seats where you can't see anything. They all consist of the same design and the same problems inside and out.

Every college stadium is unique, from Boise State's blue field to Ohio State's Horseshoe. Every college football stadium comes unique and some can be among the most dangerous around. Don't forget the roaring student section at the home games.

Winner: College Football

Overtimes

5 of 12

Did anyone watch this overtime just a short time ago with Air Force and Navy? That's how overtime is played.

NFL overtime consists of a coin flip and more than half the time when the offense gets the ball, they drive and win. Yeah, the defense gets their shot to stop the offense but still, it isn't really fair.

In college, both teams get the ball and after three scores you have to go for two points and can't kick the extra point, which makes it even more exciting. College football is a huge winner here.

Fans

6 of 12

There is nothing crazier than a college football crowd. From the painted chest to double cokes hooked onto a helmet with tubes for you to drink from. There is just nothing like it. Again, you can't forget the student section and that's what gives your school the advantage on the field.

I've noticed that in the NFL, fans show a lack of respect towards their own team. I've seen in almost every game fans booing because of a stupid play call or if the quarterback throws it right into the hands of the defender for the interception. They need to stop that and support your team whether they make a bad play or not. Fans do also go all out in crazy and weird ways but i don't think it edges college football.

Winner: College Football

Tailgating

7 of 12

Tailgating is one of the greatest things about football. You can throw the ball with your old man, grill up a steak or predict the game play-by-play. Tailgating is for everyone.

NFL has some fun tailgating, but I have gone to some colleges where tailgating is three times bigger than the tailgating put together in the NFL. The biggest one just happens to be at my favorite school, Ole Miss.

Winner: College Football

Coaches

8 of 12

The better coaches coach in the NFL. That is just plain and simple. Some legendary coaches come from both pro and college. But NFL coaches are just the best of the best.

Winner: NFL

Discipline with Players

9 of 12

In the sport of football, you need to show your sportsmanship. In the NFL there is at least three fights a game and it gets annoying. In the pros, they don't get penalized enough and they go back out and do it again.

In college, the players have to have discipline in order to play or they're out for an extended amount of time and will cause a flag for their team.

Winner: College

Rules

10 of 12

The differences in rules between the two can be big. In college you have to have one foot in after catching and in the NFL you have to have two. In college if you're down, you're down, and in NFL you have to be down by contact.

There is more I can't name at this moment, but i take CFB on this one anyday. I support NFL rules for all of that but i like CFB's more and it makes more sense and saves controversy.

Winner: College

Halftime Shows

11 of 12

NFL halftime shows contain beautiful cheerleaders playing to the new hip-hop songs of today. Sometimes the shows can contain a special guest performing.

College shows are much more for school pride. Your band gets to come on and play the school's fight songs and some songs played by the school over the ages.

Winner: College Football

The Winner

12 of 12

Well, college football wins this one 9-2. This is entirely my opinion and some other people I have talked to have agreed with me on this entirely. Feel free to drop a comment about which is your favorite and why.
