NFL Trade Rumors: Why Miami Dolphins Shouldn't Re-Explore Kyle Orton Trade

Ryan PhillipsOct 10, 2011

Yes, Tim Tebow took over for Kyle Orton at quarterback for the Denver Broncos on Sunday against the San Diego Chargers. And yes the Miami Dolphins almost had a deal worked out to obtain Orton via trade before the season started. That doesn't mean Miami should try to re-open talks for the Purdue product now that he appears to be out of a job in Denver.

Orton was benched at the half on Sunday as he was in the middle of what can only be described as a brutal outing. He completed six of 13 passes for just 34 yards, with no touchdowns and an interception. Tebow came in and wasn't a whole lot better but he provided a spark for Denver's offense and got them moving.

For the season, Orton has completed 91 of 155 passes (58.7 percent) for 979 yards, with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also has two fumbles and a quarterback rating of 75.7. On top of that, he has a record of 4-13 in his last 17 starts.

Miami is already 0-4, they don't need another reason for fans to be angry. Trying to make a move for Orton at this point in the season would accomplish nothing. Chad Henne was placed on injured reserve last week due to a separated shoulder, meaning that Matt Moore will take over as the team's current starting quarterback.

While Orton would be an upgrade over Moore, he would have to pick up the offense midseason and there is no reason to believe the team could turn things around anyway. Trading for Orton would simply accomplish nothing. At 0-4 Miami's 2011 season is likely over.

Without Henne, the Dolphins have no chance this season and might as well just pack things in and start preparing "Welcome Andrew!" banners for the opening day of the 2012 NFL Draft, where they will almost certainly be in a position to take Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
