Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 49ers' Vernon Davis Says Bucs Quit in Week 5

Tim KeeneyOct 10, 2011

After their 48-3 drubbing of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, it appears the San Francisco 49ers are for real.

It was clearly a statement game from the Niners, but should it really have ever gotten this bad?

“They were really frustrated.”  Davis said. “I mean, I felt like they gave up. That’s what I saw. I felt like they gave up. I was trying to tell, I think it was Barber, Ronde, I was telling him: ‘Get your guys. Get your guys. Y’all got to play harder, y’all got to play harder.’”

That's now two straight weeks that San Francisco's opponent has been accused of quitting. Last week, Frank Gore said the Philadelphia Eagles quit in the second half.

Do the Niners really have some magical way to make teams suddenly succumb under pressure? Are they actually so good that opposing teams figure they have no chance to win?

Or are Frank Gore and Vernon Davis getting a little too arrogant after two very nice wins?

It's most likely the latter, but after Tampa Bay's performance, can you really argue they didn't quit?

San Fran pretty much had all their subs in by the fourth quarter yet they still put up another 14 points to close out the game.

Even Colin "Laepernick" Kaepernick (from ESPN's play by play: "C. Laepernick in at QB") looked like a capable quarterback.

And then once Kendall Hunter started ripping off huge run after huge run, it's pretty apparent the Bucs were ready for the game to be over.

But in all honestly, Davis' comments are far from necessary at this point.

The Niners just tore apart the Bucs in an embarrassing fashion. There's no doubt that teams and players across the league will notice that score and begin to notice San Francisco.

Davis doesn't need to go pointing out the obvious to get his team some attention. Hey Vernon, if you want the 49ers to get some respect, act like you've been here before. Act like in your NFL career your team has played a game as good as this one.

Don't go running to the press telling them you made the other team quit. There's no point.
