NFL Picks Week 5: Who Will Win Bears vs Lions Monday Night Football?

Ryan PhillipsOct 10, 2011

The Detroit Lions enter Monday night's matchup with the Chicago Bears with a 4-0 record, and are looking to prove that they belong in the conversation as the best team in the NFL. Tonight will be a chance to show how good they are before a national television audience.

The Lions face a Bears team that is struggling mightily, at 2-2. Chicago pulled out a 34-29 win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 4, but had lost consecutive games to New Orleans and Green Bay after opening the season with a convincing 30-12 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

Given how they've played this season, the Lions should come away with a big home win tonight.

Detroit will bring the NFL's 11th-ranked offense into tonight's matchup, averaging 375.8 yards per game. The Lions are also scoring 33.8 points per game, which is second in the NFL. They will be facing a Bears team that has been uncharacteristically soft on defense so far this season.

Chicago is currently 31st in total defense in the NFL right now, allowing a ridiculous 425.8 yards per game, while they are also surrendering 24.5 points per game.

Make no mistake, this game will boil down to the Bears' ability to slow down Matthew Stafford, Calvin Johnson and the Lions' offense. And I don't think they can do it.

The Bears also don't have what it takes on offense to keep up with Detroit. Chicago currently ranks 24th in total offense (307.8 yards per game), and quarterback Jay Cutler leads the league's 24th-ranked passing attack (211.5 yards per game).

Expecting anything less than a solid Lions victory tonight would be foolish. The Bears would have to play their best game of the season to escape Ford Field with a win, and Detroit would have to absolutely lay an egg.

I don't see either of those things happening, as the Lions will pull away in the second half for a comfortable win.
