Packers vs. Falcons: Atlanta No Longer a Lock to Win at Home

Alex KayOct 10, 2011

The 2010 Atlanta Falcons went 13-3 and only lost one single game at home in the Georgia Dome during the regular season.

That wasn’t until Week 16 against the New Orleans Saints that the Falcons lost at home but they have already matched their total losses for the season and at home by Week 5 of this season.

It’s obvious that the Falcons’ home field advantage is no longer the threat it was in seasons prior. Teams have figured out how to play this team in the dome and they nearly lost to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 2 at home as well.

If it weren’t for a Michael Vick injury that saw him miss the end of the game, we could very possibly be talking about a Falcons’ team that is 0-2 at home right now.

Next week they take on the Carolina Panthers in the dome and that is going to be a pivotal game for the team.

Cam Newton and his club play very well in domes, as evidenced by his very first NFL action against Arizona in which they lost 21-28 in a game that went down to the wire.

If the Falcons fall to their 1-4 division rival at home, we can safely say that the Georgia Dome is no longer an insurmountable advantage for opposing teams to overcome.

The biggest problem I noticed from last night was the Falcons’ inability to hold a lead. They took a 14-0 lead on the defending Super Bowl champions, but could not protect it.

The defense played well and constantly pressured Aaron Rodgers, but they could not stop the big plays that the Packers thrive on and eventually lost, 25-14.

Expect the Falcons to play another close one next week at home and prove that their home field advantage is dead.
