Detroit Lions: Monday Night Football Is Just a Stepping Stone to More Attention

Sean RinehartOct 9, 2011

Some fans have no idea because they have been spoiled; their teams are always in contention for a championship.

Not in Detroit.

A 12-year-old Lions fan would not remember the last time Detroit played in the postseason.  A 19-year-old fan was born right around the time the Lions last won a playoff game, which was a 38-6 victory over the Dallas Cowboys.

Welcome to the new generation.  This generation only has one past impression of the Lions, and that is a vision of losing.  Over the past 10 years, every fan has wondered how the Lions were going to lose on Sunday.  It is hard to remember a game where many fans felt as if their home team had a chance at a victory.

However, times have changed.  This is a Detroit team that people want to watch.  This is a team people, including local and national media, cannot stop talking about.  With the rising Lions and the success of the Tigers and Red Wings (not to mention the soon-to-be success of the Pistons), Detroit is back on the map, and in a great way.

Gone are the days where people could only talk about how horrible this city was.  Fans are tired of hearing about how bad the economy is and how much people are suffering.  While these are true statements, fans want something to cheer about.  Detroit has always been known as a "blue-collar" city, which is a statement all Detroiters embrace; however, sometimes people just want and/or need an escape.

Enter the 2011-12 Detroit Lions.

This team has provided fans with a lot of drama, and we are only four weeks into the season.  This is a team that has proved it can come back from a seemingly insurmountable deficit.  The Lions have shown flashes of greatness, but have yet to put together a great game.

It is as if this Lions team is a symbol for the overall motto of the city, which is to never give up no matter the odds.  Fans who have never given up on this troubled franchise are about to be rewarded, and in a big way.

While the Lions are going to continue their journey towards the postseason, fans should realize this is only one step on a long road towards redemption.

Monday Night Football in Detroit is going to be an amazing scene tonight.  The electricity will be felt from miles around.  People all over the nation are going to witness firsthand why Detroit is the greatest sports city in the nation.

Get ready Detroit fans, this will not be the last time the Lions will be playing in prime time. Detroit is finally back in the spotlight, and no city deserves it more.
