Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups: Victor Cruz and 3 Most Overlooked Future Stars

Ryan RudnanskyOct 10, 2011

It's hard to put a whole lot of faith in young players when it comes to the big, bad National Football League, but sometimes faith pays off in a big way.

Last season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers teammates LeGarrette Blount and Mike Williams shocked the fantasy football world with spectacular rookie campaigns, dashing and dancing all the way to the end zone.

For those fantasy owners who picked them up early, they watched with amusement as Blount and Williams tore through opponents' hearts.

Well, another season, another group of stars.

Here are three of the most overlooked future stars in fantasy football.

3. Colt McCoy, QB, Cleveland Browns

I'm surprised how quickly Colt McCoy's preseason buzz has faded.

After showing strides in his rookie campaign in 2010, McCoy has thrown for 984 yards, six touchdowns and three interceptions in four games.

Sure, he's not an elite option at QB, but he's an up-and-coming player, meaning he's only going to get better.

He's behind a strong offensive line that has only allowed him to be sacked six times all season. What's more, he's only owned in 33 percent of Yahoo! Sports leagues. He's the ideal backup option for the second half of the season.

2. Torrey Smith, WR, Baltimore Ravens

Rookie Torrey Smith's breakout performance this season was in Week 3 against the St. Louis Rams. Smith took over for the injured Lee Evans and proceeded to rack up 153 yards and three touchdowns.

However, just as soon as he appeared, he was gone. Week 4 was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performance for Smith, who caught one ball for one yard.

He's only owned in 39 percent of Yahoo! Sports leagues, having scared off his once-loyal fantasy owners.

But this kid can play. You may as well stash him on your bench. He'll have his ups and downs, but I wouldn't be surprised if he has a few more huge performances for us this season.

1. Victor Cruz, WR, New York Giants

As of this writing, Victor Cruz is owned in nearly 60 percent of Yahoo! Sports leagues. He's becoming less ignored as the weeks go by.

If he's still on your waiver wire, pick him up and pick him up fast. The undrafted rookie is making a splash this season, and he's racked up 369 yards and three touchdowns in the last three weeks.

Eli Manning trusts him, and you should, too.
