NFL Rumors: Will NFL Take More Games Across the Pond to London?

Andrew KulhaOct 10, 2011

When I think about London, one of the last things I think about is NFL football.

Usually, I think of the big clock tower, the Royal Family and tons of good "football," but I never ever think about NFL football.

We've seen the NFL take their services across the pond a few times before, but I wouldn't say that they had tremendous results.

Nonetheless, rumor has it that the NFL is looking to double the amount of NFL action that we see over in London. Tom Carpenter of ESPN Insider writes more on the situation:

"

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is interested in expanding the league's annual action in London, England, by a game, according to the Associated Press. He said the move to two regular-season games will be discussed at the owners' meetings this week.

"It's been tremendously successful," Goodell said Sunday. "Fan reaction has been overwhelmingly positive, and we want to build on that."

The NFL is riding high early this season after getting their collective bargaining agreement in place with the players while avoiding missing any regular-season action. So it's no surprise they want to continue expanding and internationalizing their brand. This season's tilt in England will come in Week 7 between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Chicago Bears.

"

While I can understand why Goodell wants to expand the league, I'm not sure how an extra game is going to help much.

No matter how much they tried there was absolutely no way to replicate the atmosphere of a real NFL stadium in a real NFL city.

Sure, you can fill up a stadium with tons of people who want to watch NFL football, but it's very hard to fill up a stadium of passionate football fans that want nothing more than to seem their team play.

It's always a cute idea, but I just don't believe it will be all that effective.

It's essentially like pushing soccer in the USA, and we all know how that has gone over.
