UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Ready for Next Challenge After Pounding Maynard
MMA isn't boxing, but superstars in combat sports need great battles and rivalries to stamp their careers appropriately. Frankie Edgar just put an exclamation point of his saga with Gray Maynard.
After his exciting and dramatic KO of Maynard at UFC 136, Edgar is ready for the next guy on the list. Who that is depends on several factors. Dana White has said that he would like to see Edgar drop down to featherweight and take on the king of that division, Jose Aldo.
Aldo also won last night as he completely outclassed UFC veteran Kenny Florian. Edgar shouldn't have to launch himself directly into another potential epic confrontation. If he does go that route, the yet to be signed Gilbert Melendez from Strikeforce is who Edgar seems to favor.
By most accounts, Melendez stills seems to be the most highly regarded fighter at lightweight. Either way, Edgar seems to be at least up to the challenge when it comes to heart.
He just proved he has the mental makeup to be dominant or competitive in this sport for a long time with his besting of the tough and talented Gray Maynard.
White usually gets what he wants, but in either scenario he comes out great. Aldo-Edgar would be as big a pay-per-view draw as any lower weight class fighters could establish. While, Edgar-Melendez would be something like unifying the lightweight title.
Either way, it is cash for Dana.
