AP Poll College Football Week 7: 5 Teams Who Should Be out

Dan VastaOct 9, 2011

The new rankings are out and there are several questionable decisions that were made by the AP Pollsters. There are a few teams that have absolutely no business being ranked, and somehow there are a few red hot scorching teams that remain unranked.

Come on man! I have five teams that should not be ranked in the latest Top 25 of the Associated Press.

We are just in early October, however, nothing beats water cooler talk about the latest rankings.

No. 22 Texas Longhorns

1 of 5

Seriously, why are the Longhorns still ranked? Sure it was Oklahoma who beat Texas but they were absolutely clobbered for four quarters.

The so called great Texas defense allowed 453 yards to the Sooners and they were bombed, 55-17. I thought Texas was a legit top 20 heading into the game, but now I wonder how much better they are from last season?

Their offense was avoiding the turnovers until they coughed it up five times against the Sooners yesterday, two of which were brought back for touchdowns. Texas should win eight games this year, but after suffering a blowout loss on a neutral field are they worthy of being ranked No. 22?

Their quarterback situation is a mess with Case McCoy and David Ash, and I am unsure if they can even hang with Oklahoma State next weekend. If they suffer another blowout loss they may be out for good.

No. 24 Auburn

2 of 5

Auburn came into the season with solid expectations and they ran into a buzzsaw with Arkansas where they were smoked, 38-14.

The star receivers were both out, in Emory Blake and Travante Stallworth, and the Tigers suffered. They used several different quarterbacks.

Barrett Trotter, Clint Moseley and Kiehl Frazier all combined for 104 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. Even if your top pass catchers are out, your backups must be able to produce and fill in admirably.

Auburn was extremely disappointing since some "experts" still believe Auburn is a legit Top 25 team. Now the Tigers should be a lock for six, possibly seven, wins but anything more would be unlikely.

They get to host Florida next week before they must go to Baton Rouge against the top-ranked LSU Tigers. Plus they still have Georgia and Alabama on the schedule in the gauntlet known as the SEC.

Auburn is not worthy of being ranked since their two losses were in lopsided defeats and I really question if the pollsters watched their game last night.

The defense allowed 438 yards to the Razorbacks which included 176 on the ground and 262 through the air. The defense ranks 105th in the nation and dead last in the SEC with 439 yards per game. Not only are they not worthy of being ranked, but they are not even among the top six teams in the SEC.

No. 23 Michigan State

3 of 5

The Spartans had a bye week and somehow jumped several teams. Why? They were blown out by Notre Dame in their lone loss, plus they have played garbage teams.

Ohio State has proven they are not going to be winning more than six games this season so I can't consider a win in the Horseshoe a significant victory.

Plus the Spartans's schedule is not going to allow them to jump ahead of the ranking unless they can upset Michigan next weekend.

The Spartans have had major issues with their offensive line and have not been able to run the ball. Kirk Cousin has BJ Cunningham, who has proven to be a viable option downfield, but that is all they have with Keshawn Martin and Keith Nichol remaining as possession receivers.

Edwin Baker went bonkers last season and he has ran for only 252 yards with just one touchdown. In fact, Le'Veon Bell is the leading rusher and the offense is just 61st in total offense averaging 398 yards per game. Those numbers at the moment are slightly ahead of last season's, though the competition starts to get tougher.

The defense does rank first in the nation at the moment, but those numbers may change next week against Denard Robinson and the Wolverines high-octane offense.

If they can pull off the upset and prove they are worthy of being ranked, then I will gladly eat crow but until proven otherwise I will say they have no business in the my Top 25.

No. 25 Houston

4 of 5

The Houston Cougars have arguably the greatest quarterback in the history of the sport from a productive standpoint. However, they have played nobody!

I may be among the few people who actually watch every Houston game, but let me tell you how awful their defense is.

They rank 71st in the nation allowing nearly 400 yards a game against the following opponents: UCLA, North Texas, Louisiana Tech, Georgia State, UTEP and East Carolina!

Go ahead and convince me those teams are worthy of even talking about. That list of teams are a combined 11-20, which is atrocious!

Case Keenum has already thrown for over 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns, which is nothing short of remarkable, but their defense will not allow them to run the table even with their easy schedule. I rank teams in my Top 25 who have impressed me the most along with their schedule and margin of victory.

That would also be known as passing the eye ball test and Houston is still a few more dominating victories away from getting in my Top 25.

No. 19 Virginia Tech

5 of 5

If you threw the preseason ranking out the door I am not sure the Hokies would be that close to being ranked.

They have been extremely disappointing, and after the defense allowed 519 yards to Miami I would have actually dropped the Hokies completely out of the Top 25.

Logan Thomas had a tremendous comeback victory against Miami as he totaled 338 yards with four touchdowns. Also, David Wilson ran for 128 yards and thank God, because the Hokies were able to just barely pull off the victory, 38-35.

However, Miami's Lamar Miller gashed the Hokies for 166 yards on the ground along with a touchdown. This Hokies defense has not been great in consecutive weeks and somebody should take notice. Allowing 842 yards in two weeks is not Top 25 worthy. If Beamer's boys continue to get into shootouts they will fall flat on their faces.
