Chael Sonnen-Anderson Silva and 7 Super Fights We Want on the Super Bowl Card

Matt SaccaroOct 9, 2011

Chael Sonnen called out UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and set a (tentative) date: the UFC card the Saturday before the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl is the largest event in American sports, and putting a UFC card around the same date to capitalize on its popularity would be a great move, but only the UFC is offering the very best matches possible.

So what are the very best matches? Who would fans love to see on the "Super Bowl Card?" Read and find out, but keep in mind that many of these matchups are fantasy matchups; it's unlikely that the UFC would put so many main-eventers on one card.

Maximo Blanco vs. Josh Grispi

1 of 8

Lightweight King of Pancrase Maximo Blanco lost to Pat Healy in Strikeforce but was still brought to the UFC.

To be fair to Blanco, he shouldn't be given a top echelon fighter in his UFC debut. That is where Josh Grispi comes in. Grispi is good but is on a slump, having lost two straight.

Both men are skilled fighters and put on a good show. Seeing them fight would be a treat!

Jim Hettes vs. Jonathan Brookins

2 of 8

Jonathan Brookins recently lost to Eric Koch and will need a fight to attempt to rebound his career. Jim Hettes recently submitted "Bruce Leroy" Alex Caceres in impressive fashion and will be looking to beat a big name fighter.

The match makes sense, and it'd be a fun one to watch since both men have very good grappling abilities.

Edson Barboza vs. Sam Stout

3 of 8

A fight between lightweight strikers Edson Barboza and Sam Stout would be a candidate for fight of the year.

Both men are very exciting strikers but are also very technical fighters as well. A fight between them would therefore be a barn-burner but also a kickboxing/Muay Thai clinic. It would be a perfect fight to feature on a Super Bowl Card.

Anthony Pettis vs. Joe Lauzon

4 of 8

Anthony Pettis just defeated Jeremy Stephens; Joe Lauzon just defeated Melvin Guillard. Both fighters are lightweight, and both are on a course for the top.

There is no better way to see which fighter deserves the bigger fights than putting these two against one another. It would also make quite an exciting fight!

Demian Maia vs. Vitor Belfort

5 of 8

Watching top middleweights Demian Maia and Vitor Belfort fight would be a thing of beauty.

It would be an extremely intriguing Striker vs. Grappler matchup that would determine the number one contender to the winner of the Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen fight.

Nick Diaz vs. Georges St-Pierre

6 of 8

If UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz win their respective fights against Carlos Condit and B.J. Penn, then a title fight between them to take place on the Super Bowl card would be epic!

Who wouldn't want to see if the "Stockton slap" could be used effectively on St-Pierre?

Frankie Edgar vs. Jose Aldo

7 of 8

A super-fight between UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo would be a legendary fight; one totally worthy of a Super Bowl card!

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen

8 of 8

With stakes as (according to Chael Sonnen, at least) high as Anderson Silva vacating middleweight or Chael Sonnen leaving the UFC forever, who wouldn't want to see this epic rematch?

Sonnen was the only fighter who made Silva look mortal during his UFC career, and since then, fans have been dying for a rematch.

In addition, Sonnen will produce an unbelievable amount of hype for this fight, making it one that fans won't want to miss.
