Aaron Hernandez Injury: Projecting Fantasy Stock for Deion Branch, Ochocinco

Andrea HangstOct 9, 2011

With New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez looking likely to return to the field in this afternoon's contest against the New York Jets, the fantasy value of Tom Brady's many receivers seems, at first glance, to be negatively affected.

However, a closer look shows that neither Deion Branch nor Chad Ochocinco are much of a worthwhile fantasy start no matter who plays or sits for the Patriots offense.

Through four games, Ochocinco has only seven catches for 113 yards and no scores. He was targeted just twice last week against the Oakland Raiders, for 26 yards.

Branch has fared better so far this season, with 16 catches for 226 yards and a touchdown, but last week was just as limited as Ocho, with one four-yard grab for a touchdown and nothing else.

Brady throws to whoever is open, and it's clear that both Ochocinco and Branch have issues separating from coverage. That's the primary reason why tight end Rob Gronkowski and receiver Wes Welker are getting the majority of Brady's looks.

They are also the only Patriots who would suffer, from a fantasy standpoint, from Hernandez's return. Considering that Hernandez, should he play today, won't be entirely healthy and will thus see his playing time limited, fantasy owners of Brady's top two targets shouldn't have much to worry about.

Neither Ochocinco or Branch are worth a starting role on your fantasy roster. Branch certainly has more value, and if you're in a deeper league, he may have to get a starting nod. Otherwise, avoid the two receivers, regardless of who is or is not playing.
