UFC 136 Results: 3 Reasons Anderson Silva Will End Chael Sonnen's Career

Sean SmithOct 9, 2011

One of the most intriguing rematches in MMA history looks to be set after Chael Sonnen picked up a victory over Brian Stann at UFC 136 on Saturday night. Immediately after the bout, Sonnen called out UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva, who was sitting ringside for the event.

In his post-fight interview with UFC commentator Joe Rogan, Sonnen offered a wager to Silva. According to the terms of Sonnen's bet, Silva would have to leave the middleweight division if he loses to Sonnen, while Sonne would leave the UFC if he loses to Silva again.

While a rematch with Silva may be his only option, Sonnen's second meeting with "The Spider" could very well lead to the end of his UFC career. Here's why.

Chael Sonnen Is Overconfident

1 of 3

After putting on a surprisingly strong performance against Anderson Silva at UFC 117, Chael Sonnen may be a little too confident in his ability to dethrone the middleweight champion. The only answer Silva had for Sonnen in that fight was a desperation triangle choke.

It is possible that Sonnen thinks the only thing standing between him and a win over Silva is his submission defense. In reality, Silva has plenty of other ways to beat Sonnen, so this is a fight that Sonnen will need to have his full focus for.

The Fight Means More for Anderson Silva

2 of 3

While Chael Sonnen looked like a man on a mission at UFC 136, a rematch with Anderson Silva would be much more important for the champion than the challenger.

Usually, title fights are much more pivotal for the contender. However, Silva is looking to cement himself as the greatest fighter in MMA history, and the most disappointing moment in his UFC career was his near-defeat to Sonnen in their first meeting.

By beating Sonnen in impressive fashion, Silva will not only silence a rival, but he would lay to rest any idea that Georges St-Pierre is a better champion at this moment in time.

Anderson Silva Will Be Healthy

3 of 3

In his first bout against Chael Sonnen, Anderson Silva was competing with a significant rib injury. However, the pound-for-pound king was able to catch Sonnen in an unbelievable submission with only two minutes remaining in a fight that he would have lost on the scorecards.

If Silva enters his rematch healthy, it will be a completely different fight than his first against Sonnen. Silva's takedown defense was non-existent at UFC 117. Silva will surely have more success in keeping the fight standing if he doesn't have any physical problems the second time around.
