UFC 136 Results: Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz: 10 of the Best Trash Talk Moments

Matt SaccaroOct 9, 2011

Chael Sonnen and Nick Diaz are two of the best and most prolific trash talkers in the sport of mixed martial arts and even in the sports world in general.

Together, they have produced dozens upon dozens of sound bytes that entertained MMA fans and, more importantly, captured their pay-per-view and ticket buys.

What are some of the best of these trash talking moments? Read and find out!

Nick Diaz Has a Plan and It Involves Lots of Weed...

1 of 10

One of the most outrageous Nick Diaz quotes has to be when he told the L.A. Times that his cannabis use was part of an over-arching MMA plan.

"I'm more consistent about everything being a cannabis user," Diaz said. "I'm happy to get loaded, hear some good music...I remain consistent. And I have an easy way to deal with [the drug tests]."

Diaz then admitted that he toked up before each fight in the UFC, saying, "I got high in my [hotel] room the night before every [UFC] fight,"

Maybe not trash talk per se, but an incredible moment nonetheless.

UFC 117 Pre-Fight Press Conference

2 of 10

So incredible is Sonnen's trash talking that each one of his lines in all of his interviews and media appearances are gold; it's next to impossible to pick out just one amazing line.

However, Sonnen still does have some great events and interviews that are a cut above the rest. The UFC 117 pre-fight press conference is one such instance.

Honorable mention: "Who's [Anderson Silva] Even beat who's even held their spot on the roster? Two or three guys?" for its stinging truthfulness.

Nick Diaz Gives Frank Shamrock the Middle Finger

3 of 10

Not exactly trash "talk" but a picture is worth a thousand words, after all.

Nick Diaz gave the middle finger to Frank Shamrock at the press conference before the two met in Strikforce's cage, where Diaz would retire Shamrock.

Chael Gets Risque

4 of 10

"You heard about the time when Ed Soares, the Noguiera brothers and Anderson all walked into a bar, but there was only one stool left, right? So they just turned it up side down...did you know that one?"

Sonnen smashed the Black House team with this joke at the UFC 133 "Q and A" session.

Sonnen Threatens Georges St-Pierre

"I put Anderson Silva out for a year and when I'm done with that I'm gonna put GSP out for a decade," Sonnen told the Zappos.com blog team.

Harsh words from a harsh man.

Who Throws a Shoe? Honestly?

6 of 10

According to a Diego Sanchez interview done by Kevin Iole, an angry Nick Diaz threw a shoe at Sanchez.

"

"One former opponent, Nick Diaz, badgered him via e-mail to sign for a fight. Once the bout was signed, Sanchez said the e-mails from Diaz grew harsher and more disrespectful.

Diaz, Sanchez said, insulted his family and questioned his manhood.

"It became very personal, but it backfired on him because it caused me to train harder than I ever trained," Sanchez said.

Sanchez said Diaz was cursing at him and threw a shoe at him in the locker room before the Sept. 5, 2005, bout at the Hard Rock."

"

After hearing this, there's really only one thing to say: Who throws a shoe? Honestly?

Diaz Incinuates He Wants to Slap Ariel Helwani

7 of 10

In an interview that was full of great (and bizarre) sound bytes, Nick Diaz insinuated that he wanted to slap Ariel Helwani.

"I feel that you instigate fights quite a bit...where I come from, people like that get slapped," Diaz told Helwani.

The whole interview is worth watching as a character study of Nick Diaz.

Nick Diaz Misses the Beauty Pagaent

8 of 10

Nick Diaz's flagrant disregard for the media finally cost him; he lost his chance to fight for the UFC welterweight title against Georges St-Pierre because he skipped out on two press conferences.

Did he care? Not really. He sarcastically apologized for missing the "beauty pageant."

"They Fed the Bus a CARROT!"

9 of 10

The entire interview that Ariel Helwani conducts with Chael Sonnen is full of amazing quotes and it's difficult to pick just one out of the almost 20 minute video.

However, one of the most insulting (and absurd) is when he claims that he witnessed the Nogueira brothers mistake a bus for a horse and then attempt to feed it a carrot.

He also claims that he had no idea that Brazil had no Internet capabilities. It's one of his funniest interviews.

Sonnen Gets His Come-Uppins—Sort Of

10 of 10

If there's anything better than a trash-talker, it's when someone finally stands up to one.

Thus, one of Sonnen's best trash talking moments was when Wanderlie Silva questioned Sonnen about his various insults hurled towards Brazil and Sonnen had nothing to say.
