UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Proves Speed and Heart a Deadly Combination
For the second time in as many fights, fans were left wondering how Frankie Edgar even made it out of the first round.
After taking a number of brutal punches from Gray Maynard, Edgar was once again on dream street just moments into their UFC 136 bout, but this time it looked like Maynard had learned from his mistakes and wouldn’t punch himself out.
But somehow Edgar survived the round and recovered just as quickly as he did in their fight at UFC 125 and came back with a vengeance, winning rounds two and three handily before finishing the fight in Round 4 with a flurry of punches.
Edgar has shown a level of heart and determination that cannot be duplicated over his last few fights and while it has been the story that has been latched onto by fans and media alike, it has overshadowed the most impressive part of Edgar’s arsenal: his speed.
Edgar once again showed how well speed can be utilized to win fights, as he beat Maynard to the punch time and time again, and used his superior footwork and head movement to adjust to Maynard’s striking attack.
As if guys didn’t have enough to worry about when Edgar was just faster and more technical than them on the feet, last night he showed he has the power to knockout a guy who had never been finished.
There are a lot of guys who are considered fast and plenty who are said to have that so called “warrior’s spirit” but no one is able to fuse the two together and get results like Edgar does.
Whether he is beating BJ Penn in a boxing match or surviving a Maynard onslaught, only to come back and finish him in the later rounds, Edgar is constantly forcing guys to fight his fight, and as long as he does so it will be almost impossible to beat him.
