Week 7 College Football Rankings 2011: Huge Oklahoma Win Puts Them Back on Top

Alex KayOct 9, 2011

The Oklahoma Sooners handled their business in the Red River Rivalry game this Saturday against Texas.

I have an inkling that Bob Stoops’ boys were just a little upset that they were bumped from the No. 1 spot in the polls despite being in that position preseason and not having lost a single time yet.

They took that anger out on the Longhorns and easily won, 55-17. They played excellent on both sides of the ball and the game was never in doubt as they took an early, commanding lead and never let off the gas.

You know who took notice of this highly publicized and nationally televised win?

The coaches who vote in the USA Today Poll.

These guys have made Oklahoma No. 1 again for the seventh consecutive week and widened the gap between the Sooners and LSU by 17 first-place votes this week.

This is going to be important for when the BCS polls come out next week. The coaches’ poll is just as significant as the AP poll when the BCS calculates their rankings.

I believe that this huge win is going to sway some voters of the AP poll as well. The rankings for the AP Top 25 won’t be released until tomorrow, but Alabama played a weak Vanderbilt team and LSU took on Florida team without their starting QB.

If the voters take this into consideration, as well as Oklahoma completely wiping the floor with the No. 11 team in the nation, I can’t see them not jumping at least one spot.

They completely deserve to be the No. 1 team in the nation and have done nothing but play like it. It would be crazy not to consider the Sooners for the top team in the nation after their huge win on Saturday.
