UFC 136 Results: Was UFC 136 the Greatest Event of 2011?

Adam OsterkampOct 9, 2011

Not only was UFC 136: Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar the greatest event of 2011 thus far, it’s sure to go down as one of the best cards in the sports history.

From the moment it started on Saturday night, UFC 136 was full of great action and displays of awesome athleticism, skill and heart.

The preliminary cards started out impressively with two middleweight bouts that both went the distance and saw all four fighters go after each other with nearly everything they had.

Perhaps the dullest fight of the night was the third prelim bout where Zhang Tie Quan was overpowered by fellow featherweight Darren Elkins.

Then there was the heavyweight bout between Joey Beltran and Stipe Miocic, which was another fight that had great action and show cased Miocic’s skills and confidence.

There was of course what many believe to be an upset as Joe Lauzon chocked out Melvin Guillard at just 47 seconds into the first round. Lauzon caught Guillard with a good jab before mounting him and sinking in a rear naked choke for the victory.

Then there was the fight that received “Fight of the Night” honors amongst so many great fights. Nam Phan vs. Leonard Garcia was a fight that makes us all remember why we love this sport so much. Both fighters left everything they had in the cage and showcased great sportsmanship. It was the kind of fight that everyone loves to see.

"If I beat you, you leave the Middleweight division. If you beat me, I'll leave the UFC forever,” Chael Sonnen said after his win over Brian Stann. I’m just going to leave it at that because it’s incredible.

After Sonnen’s epic post fight statement it appeared that nothing could happen to top that moment. Then Frankie Edgar showed up.

As the first and second round went down between Maynard and Edgar in a near mirror image to what happened at UFC 125 nobody could believe their eyes.

Then, as if what was happening wasn’t unbelievable enough, Edgar catches Maynard in the fourth and gets a TKO victory! Are you kidding me?! If you weren’t on your feet at the end of that fight, you are not a fight fan.

And do you wanna know what the best thing of all is? The thing that should leave us all smiling through the end of the year? There are still lots of cards left in 2011, many of which have the absolute potential to be more exhilarating than UFC 136.
