UFC 136 Results: What Did We Learn from Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian?

G DOct 9, 2011

Jose Aldo and Kenny Florian circled the Octagon in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year at UFC 136. When all was said and done, it was Aldo who remained the UFC Featherweight champion, defeating Florian via unanimous decision at the end of the fifth round.

As the young Brazilian's hand was raised at the end of the evening, we were able to learn many things from both Aldo and Florian.

One thing we learned from Aldo is that the UFC is levels above what the WEC was before consolidating the two. Meaning, since entering the UFC, Aldo hasn't displayed his knockout power that we once saw during his reign as the WEC Featherweight title holder.

Of Aldo's eight career fights in the WEC, seven came by the way of knockout. Since entering the UFC, the champion has yet to finish a fight, as both his bouts with Mark Hominick and Kenny Florian have gone the distance.

We also learned that Jose Aldo will eventually need to move a weight class. The only legitimate opponent remaining for Aldo right now is Chad Mendes, who recently made the transition to the UFC. A victory over Mendes would mean that Aldo's defeated nearly every challenger in his respected weight class.

Similar to Aldo, we learned many things from Florian following his loss at UFC 136.

The main concept we're now all aware of is that Florian will never be a UFC champion.

This wasn't the first time Florian stepped into the Octagon for a UFC title fight. In fact, it was his third attempt at a championship only to come up short in every fight.

Now 0-3, it is likely that Florian will never receive another chance at dethroning any weight class' champion.

More importantly, we learned "Flo" needs to retire.

Despite being a fan favorite across the UFC, Florian has now lost three of his last six bouts and appears to be on the down slope of his career. One more fight may be ideal for Florian to go out on top with a victory, but risking his legacy isn't worth it.
