UFC 136 Results: Will Chael Sonnen Become the Most Hated Man in Brazil?

Vince CareyOct 9, 2011

Chael Sonnen defeated Brian Stann by arm triangle at last night's UFC 136 event, and his post fight interview was something to be remembered, as he basically took Joe Rogan’s microphone away and went on a full out WWE style promo against Anderson Silva.

After calling out Silva and challenging him to a fight on Super Bowl weekend, Sonnen got the MMA crowd buzzing again, but comments from everyone from Dana White to Sonnen himself have made the situation a bit more interesting in regards to Sonnen’s future.

The UFC has already stated that they will be returning to Brazil in a big way in 2012, after selling out their first event in Brazil in over a decade earlier this year, and with Anderson Silva becoming a superstar in Brazil and Sonnen drawing obvious heat from Brazilian fans.

Just looking at potential ticket sales and moneymaking opportunities, it would seem to be a no-brainer to book Silva-Sonnen part two for a 100,000-seat stadium in Brazil, but there is one thing that will likely force the UFC to pass.

Brazilian fans HATE Chael Sonnen, possibly to the point where his safety is in question if they schedule a fight there.

When asked if they were considering Brazil as a potential site for the rematch, UFC President Dana White said, “I have to make sure Chael gets out of there alive”

Sonnen himself was also less than enthusiastic about fighting Anderson in his home country.

In a post fight interview Ariel Helwani asked Sonnen if he would be interested in fighting in front of 100,000 fans in Brazil, and Sonnen gave his usual outlandish response.

“If they sell 100,000 tickets I hope they put them in a nice ball, turn them sideways and shove them straight up their ***, that’s what they can do with the Brazilian crowd.”

This obviously isn’t going to help Sonnen’s Brazilian fan base, and it might give Sonnen a title he wasn’t expecting to have earned tonight: The most hated man in Brazil.

Sonnen has disrespected some of the country’s greatest athletes, its fans and the even the country itself, and would be need to be seriously concerned for his well being if he stepped foot in Brazil.

Imagine if a fighter started saying the things about the USA that Sonnen has been saying about Brazil.

American fans would be out for blood, but let's be honest the Brazilian MMA fan base is about 10 times bigger. This would be like a Brazilian athlete disrespecting the US Olympic team.

I know nothing of Brazilian politics or if there is some famous soccer player that really gets under the skin of the Brazilian people, but I feel safe saying this.

Chael Sonnen is in serious danger if he ever goes to Brazil, and the UFC would not have their fighter’s best interests at heart if the set up this fight there.

If Sonnen doesn't stop talking soon, he may very well become the most hated man in the country, no matter who else is out there drawing anger from the Brazilian population.
