UFC 136 Results: Kenny Florian and 3 Biggest Losers from Saturday Night
Every fight ends with one person sulking closer to obscurity and Saturday night was no exception.
Every fighter prepares tirelessly for their battles, particularly ones featured on a stage as big as UFC 136. Unfortunately, half of them leave with their dreams, and in some cases their careers, in shambles.
Here are the three biggest losers from Saturday night.
Kenny Florian
Florian lost by unanimous decision to Jose Aldo, dropping his record to 14-6.
I felt as though Florian wasn’t aggressive enough throughout the fight, particularly in the final round when it was apparent that he wouldn’t win by points.
I’ve never understood why fighters don’t just go "balls to the wall" (to put it eloquently) in the final round when it is clear that they will only win by knockout or submission.
This loss is particularly damning for Florian, who at 35 years of age, may never have another shot at the title.
I’m a big Kenny Florian fan and would love to see the man get another title match. However, after his loss to Aldo, I doubt that he’ll be so lucky.
Melvin Guillard
Guillard suffered Saturday’s most humiliating loss, getting choked out by Joe Lauzon just 41 seconds into the fight.
Guillard is an explosive and powerful fighter, and a win last night would have put him in prime position to make a title shot in the near future.
However, the loss—particularly the way he lost— will delay his shot for at least a few more fights.
Gray Maynard
Certainly there’s no shame in losing to your division’s title holder, but Maynard had this one in the bag before Frankie Edgar popped him on the chin.
Maynard was dominant in the early rounds, bullying the smaller Edgar into the cage and punishing him with numerous brutal shots.
But in the fourth round, Maynard caught a vicious uppercut on the chin, followed by another uppercut and a massive right hook that effectively ended his night.
Maynard knows he’s capable of beating Edgar—hell, he’s done it once. But with a chance to claim the title, he choked away a sure victory.
Maynard will be devastated when he watches the tape of this fight and realizes that he blew a glorious opportunity to stake claim as his division’s best.
