UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar and 3 Biggest Winners from Saturday Night
UFC 136 was one of the best in recent memory, with virtually every type of fight taking place. There were quick choke-outs, brawls that went the distance and a couple explosive knockouts thrown in for good measure.
Here are the three biggest winners from Saturday night.
This one is a no-brainer as Edgar achieved vengeance against Gray Maynard, the one man who has blemished Edgar’s otherwise spotless record.
And adding to the sweetness was the manner in which Edgar won.
Maynard bullied Edgar for the majority of the fight before Edgar rallied in the fourth round. He landed a vicious uppercut that rocked Maynard and then pounced, landing another uppercut and a huge right hook before the referee jumped in and stopped the fight.
Edgar improved to 14-1-1 with the victory and retained his lightweight title.
Chael Sonnen
Sonnen was absolutely dominant against Brian Stann, repeatedly putting him on his back and pummeling him once he got there.
After choking out Stann in the first round, Sonnen proceeded to call out Anderson Silva, the man whom Sonnen nearly beat a year ago.
Sonnen told Silva and the world that he wants a rematch on Super Bowl weekend, with the following stakes: If Sonnen wins, Silva leaves the middleweight division; if Silva wins, Sonnen leaves the UFC forever.
Sonnen was impressive during the fight and gave a badass post-fight call out. I’d say that qualifies as a successful evening.
Nam Phan
In what was unquestionably the night’s most exciting fight, Nam Phan prevailed over Leonard Garcia in a thrilling brawl that went the distance.
The majority of the fight was fought on their feet, where the two exchanged vicious haymakers for three heart-pounding rounds.
Phan improved to 17-9, avenging his December 2010 loss to Maynard.
Joe Rogan put it perfectly after the fight, saying that these two should fight once a year forever.
