G DOct 9, 2011

Frankie Edgar may have showed more than just why he is the lightweight champion of the world when he defeated Gray Maynard at UFC 136.

Edgar may have proven he is toughest fighter in the entire sport of mixed martial arts.

In their meeting at UFC 125, Maynard had Edgar on the ropes early, pounding away at the 155-pound champion.

Maynard unloaded hook after uppercut sending Edgar to the ground as it appeared there would soon be a new champion in town.

But there wasn't.

In fact, Edgar would rise to his feet two more times in the first round only to be knocked back down.

Even then, it wasn't enough to finish off the current champion.

Instead, Edgar bounced back putting on a performance that would ultimately lead to a draw in which allowed him to remain the lightweight champion.

With guts and glory, Edgar toughed his way to keeping his title, but knew he would eventually have to cross paths with Maynard once more.

As the two circled the Octagon in front of a sold-out Toyota Center, it was hard not to have flashbacks of their previous bout that was arguably the best lightweight fight in the history of MMA.

History repeated itself as Maynard came out firing away on all cylinders looking to capture the title that slipped away from him just 10 months earlier.

Edgar was pushed back as Maynard began teeing off in attempts of leaving Houston, Texas the new champion.

But once again, it was Edgar to steal the show.

With blood pouring out of his nose, Edgar managed to bounce back and escape Round 1.

When Round 2 began it seemed almost too good to be true as Edgar appeared fresh on his feet and ready for a five-round war.

Edgar went on to win Round 2 and 3 as the fourth frame began.

Midway through the fourth, Edgar landed a huge right hook that sent Maynard to the ground. Hungry to remain the champion, Edgar pounced on him swinging his way to victory.

Edgar revenged the only loss of his career evening their rivalry to 1-1-1.

Edgar remained the UFC lightweight champion of the world.

And, he has now been declared as the toughest fighter in MMA today.
