UFC 136 Fight Card: Joe Lauzon Thinks Melvin Guillard Was Overconfident, Cocky

Sean SmithOct 9, 2011

Heading into UFC 136, Joe Lauzon was expected to serve as a stepping stone in Melvin Guillard's path to a lightweight title shot. However, much like he did in his UFC debut more than five years ago, Lauzon shocked the world.

At UFC 63, Lauzon pulled off a massive upset by knocking out former UFC champion Jens Pulver. Now, Lauzon stifled Guillard, who was nearing a chance to compete to the 155-pound championship and may have looked past his UFC 136 opponent.

"It was good to beat him," Lauzon said in an interview with MMA Fighting. "It was so much better to beat him the way I did. He was super confident. I think he was overconfident, cocky, arrogant. I don't think he took the fight very seriously."

Guillard, who asked for the fight with Lauzon, had won eight of his previous nine bouts. Now, Lauzon is the fighter with momentum and in position to ask for a specific opponent. The 27-year-old isn't about to make the same mistake that Guillard made, though.

"I don't call people out," Lauzon said. "Bad things happen."
